Emarina Manuel
Emarina "Lena" Manuel (née Rōpata; 21 August 1915 – 16 August 1996) was a New Zealand typist, teacher, Māori welfare officer and community leader. Of Māori descent, Manuel identified with the Ngāti Kahungunu iwi. She was born in Wairoa, New Zealand, on 21 August 1915. Manuel attended Hukarere Native School for Girls. In the 1983 New Year Honours, Manuel was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the Māori people. Māori People
The Māori (, ) are the indigenous Polynesian people of mainland New Zealand (). Māori originated with settlers from East Polynesia, who arrived in New Zealand in several waves of canoe voyages between roughly 1320 and 1350. Over several centuries in isolation, these settlers developed their own distinctive culture, whose language, mythology, crafts, and performing arts evolved independently from those of other eastern Polynesian cultures. Some early Māori moved to the Chatham Islands, where their descendants became New Zealand's other indigenous Polynesian ethnic group, the Moriori. Ngāti Kahungunu
Ngāti Kahungunu is a Māori iwi located along the eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The iwi is traditionally centred in the Hawke's Bay and Wairārapa regions. The tribe is organised into six geographical and administrative divisions: ''Wairoa'', ''Te Whanganui-ā-Orotū'', ''Heretaunga'', ''Tamatea'', ''Tāmaki-nui-a Rua'' and ''Wairarapa''. It is the third largest iwi in New Zealand by population, with 61,626 people (9.2% of the Māori population) identifying as Ngāti Kahungunu in the 2013 census. Wairoa
Wairoa is a town and territorial authority district in New Zealand's North Island. The town is the northernmost in the Hawke's Bay region, and is located on the northern shore of Hawke Bay at the mouth of the Wairoa River and to the west of Māhia Peninsula. It is on State Highway 2, northeast of Napier, and southwest of Gisborne. Hukarere Girls' College
Hukarere Girls' College is a girls secondary boarding school in the Hawke's Bay Region of New Zealand. It has a strong Māori character and follows the Anglican tradition. The School motto "Kia Ū Ki Te Pai" means "Cleave to that which is good" or "Abhor that which is evil" (Romans 12 verse 9, New Testament of the Bible).
