Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, Westmount (french: Synagogue Emanu-El-Beth Sholom de Westmount) is a Reform synagogue in Westmount, Quebec. Congregation Emanu-El of New York is the first Reform Judaism, Reform Jewish congregation in New York City and, because of its size and prominence, has served as a flagship congregation in the Reform branch of Judaism since its founding in 1845. Temple Emanu-El of Dallas, Texas (founded in 1875) was the first Reform Jewish congregation in North Texas, and is the largest synagogue in the South. History Temple Emanu-El of Dallas was founded in 1873 and chartered in 1875. Originally called the Jewish Congregation Emanu-El, it was renamed Temple Emanu-El Congregation in 1974. The small but growing Jewish community felt the need for a permanent religious structure as well as for a rabbi to conduct services and to offer religious education for children, so several families formed Congregation Emanu-El. Temple Emanu-El of West Essex in Livingston, New Jersey was founded in 1955 and was one of the earliest Reform synagogues in the West Essex section of New Jersey. Emanu-El means "God is with us" in Hebrew. News reported in early 2017 that the synagogue would be closing for financial reasons and was "taking steps to merge" with a nearby congregation. History During the Gold Rush in 1849, a small group of Jews held the first High Holy Days services on the west coast of the United States in San Francisco. Temple Emanu-El is a Reform Jewish congregation in Honolulu that was established in 1938, and joined the Union for Reform Judaism in 1952. The synagogue building at 2550 Pali Highway was consecrated in 1960 under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Roy A. Rosenberg. The architect was Edward Sullam, and the builder was T. Takahashi. Temple Emanu-El (Helena, Montana)
Temple Emanu-El in Helena, Montana, United States, was the first Jewish synagogue to be constructed between St. Paul, Minnesota, and Portland, Oregon. It was completed in 1891. The once-thriving Jewish community of Helena declined to the point that by the 1930s they could no longer maintain the building, and it was sold to the State of Montana, which added a second floor, converted it to office space and removed most religious symbolism from the building, though kept the unique stained glass windows. Eventually, the building fell into disuse by the state other than storage space, and so it was purchased by the Catholic Diocese of Helena, then sold back to the Montana Jewish project which owns it today and uses it as a center for Montana's Jewish community. Temple Emanu-El is a Reform Jewish congregation in Birmingham, Alabama. History The community that would become Temple Emanu-El first held Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur celebrations in 1881. Before the synagogue was built, the community met at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for the public worship services. Land for the synagogue was purchased in 1884, and construction began in 1886.
