Elwood, Victoria
Elwood is an inner suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 8 km south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Port Phillip local government area. Elwood recorded a population of 15,153 at the 2021 census. Elwood Beach is a popular bayside beach destination during summer, where the beaches are used recreationally for windsurfing, cycling, cricket and walking. The suburb is known for its mix of Edwardian and Interwar architecture character, its beaches and its leafy streets, many of which are lined by London Plane trees. ''Harvey'' is a 1944 play by the American playwright Mary Chase (playwright), Mary Chase. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work in 1945. It has been adapted for film and television several times, most notably in a Harvey (1950 film), 1950 film starring James Stewart and Josephine Hull. Plot Elwood P. Dowd is an affable man who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend Harvey – whom Elwood describes as a six foot, three-and-one-half inch (192 cm) tall Púca, pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. The Blues Brothers are an American blues and soul revivalist band founded in 1978 by comedians Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as part of a musical sketch on ''Saturday Night Live''. Belushi and Aykroyd fronted the band, in character, respectively, as lead vocalist ' Joliet' Jake Blues and harmonica player/vocalist Elwood Blues, donning black suits with matching fedoras and sunglasses. Daniel Edward Aykroyd ( ; born July 1, 1952) is a Canadian actor, comedian, producer, musician and writer. He was an original member of the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players" on ''Saturday Night Live'' (1975–1979). During his tenure on ''SNL'', Aykroyd appeared in a recurring series of sketches about the Coneheads, and the Blues Brothers. ''Elwood'' was a sternwheel steamboat which was built to operate on the Willamette River, in Oregon, but which later operated on the Lewis River (Washington), Lewis River in Washington, the Stikine River in Canada, and on Puget Sound. The name of this vessel is sometimes seen spelled "Ellwood". ''Elwood'' is probably best known for an incident in 1893, when it was approaching the Madison Street Bridge over the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. The bridge swung open to allow the steamer to pass. However, a streetcar coming in from the east end of the bridge failed to notice the bridge was open, and ran off into the river in the Madison Street Bridge disaster. Elwood (2005 – November 28, 2013) was the 2007 winner of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest. In the prior year, 2006, he came in second in the contest. His owner was Karen Quigley, a resident of Sewell, New Jersey. He was a two-year-old Chinese Crested/ chihuahua mixed breed. Elwood died on November 28, 2013. He was eight years old. History Elwood was rescued as a result of an NJ Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals investigation. He was shivering, had a runny nose, and was making strange sounds when Karen came over to see him. Elwood still made those strange noises. Elwood's breeder felt as if Elwood was too ugly to sell and was going to put him down due to the fact that she could not sell him to anyone. Elwood (horse)
Elwood (foaled 1901 in Missouri) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse that is best remembered for winning the 1904 Kentucky Derby and for being the first horse both bred and owned by a woman to win the Derby. Pedigree Elwood was a bay colt sired by Free Knight out of the mare Petticoat (by Alarm). Free Knight finished third in the 1886 Kentucky Derby. By the time Elwood won the Derby in 1904, Free Knight had been sold for $45 and was used as a farm horse in southern Kentucky. Elwood was bred by Emma Holt Prather at Faustiana Stud in Maryville, Missouri and was bought in 1902 by Charles Durnell while on a horse buying trip to San Francisco, where the yearling was being trained. Durnell named the horse Elwood after his mother's maiden name. Racing career Elwood was a mediocre racehorse during his two-year-old and early three-year-old season, racing mostly in small stakes and a few $300 claiming races in California. Elwood is the musical project/collaboration of singer-songwriter Prince Elwood Strickland III (born in North Carolina) and co-producer and songwriter Brian Boland. Strickland worked as a recording engineer at Soho's Greene Street Recording facility where he and Boland met, working with artists such as Tricky, Mos Def, De La Soul, and Adam Yauch. Elwood worked with producer Steve Lillywhite on their debut album ''The Parlance of Our Time'', which was co-released on Palm Pictures and Lillywhite's label, Gobstopper.
