Elsinora
Elsinora Station most commonly known as Elsinora is a pastoral lease that has operated as both a sheep station and a cattle station in outback New South Wales. It is situated approximately north of White Cliffs and north west of Bourke close to the Queensland border. History The station was established in 1882 by Edward Killen who took up the lease of virgin unimproved and waterless country with boundaries that had not been surveyed. The property occupied an area of and Killen stocked it with sheep. By 1883 the owners had spent £13,000 on improvements, and by 1888 some 70,000 sheep were depastured at the station. Water boring was successful at Elsinora in 1893 when a flow rate of per day was produced. In 1894 approximately 100,000 sheep were being shorn at Elsinora. The property was owner by Killen and Co. in 1912, Killen also owned Mooculta Station. Urisino
Urisino Station most commonly known as Urisino is a pastoral lease that has operated as both a sheep station and a cattle station in outback New South Wales. It is situated about north east of White Cliffs and west of Bourke. The vegetation is predominantly composed of Mulga and mixed native species including Bimble box. In 2014 the area had found to have been overgrazed by sheep and feral goats. History Urisino was owned by Samuel Wilson in the 1860s. By 1883 the owners had spent £28,800 on improvements. In 1894 approximately 120,000 sheep were being shorn at Urisino. In 1913 the property was running sheep and was being managed by Mr Tooth who was also the manager of Elsinora and Thurloo Downs Stations. Ursino was later was a strategic watering hole for stock belonging to Sidney Kidman. Thurloo Downs Station most commonly known as Thurloo Downs is a pastoral lease that has operated as both a sheep station and a cattle station in outback New South Wales. It is located approximately north of White Cliffs and north west of Bourke on the Berawinnia Creek close to the Queensland border. The property is about two thirds lightly timbered open country with the remainder made up of sandhills and stony ridges. History Established prior to 1883 in that year it was owned by Messrs Rowan and Mactier. The property was inspected in 1896, when John Samuel Barrow was manager, and occupied an area of and was fully enclosed with eight tanks, one dam and one well. John Augustus Ibbott acquired the property in 1903 and settled there with his family of five sons and two daughters. Sidney Kidman
Sir Sidney Kidman (9 May 18572 September 1935), known as Sid Kidman and popularly named "the Cattle King", was an Australian pastoralist and entrepreneur who owned or co-owned large areas of land in Australia in his lifetime. Early life Sidney Kidman was born on 9 May 1857 in Adelaide, in the colony of South Australia, the third son of George Kidman (died December 1857), farmer, and his wife Elizabeth Mary, née Nunn. Kidman was educated at private schools in Norwood and left his home near Adelaide at age 13 with only five shillings and a one-eyed horse that he had bought with his savings. He joined a drover and learned quickly. He then worked as a roustabout and bullock-driver at Poolamacca cattle station, and Mount Gipps Station. and later as a drover, stockman and livestock trader. A pastoral lease, sometimes called a pastoral run, is an arrangement used in both Australia and New Zealand where government-owned Crown land is leased out to graziers for the purpose of livestock grazing on rangelands. Australia Pastoral leases exist in both Australian commonwealth law and state jurisdictions. They do not give all the rights that attach to freehold land: there are usually conditions which include a time period and the type of activity permitted. According to Austrade, such leases cover about 44% of mainland Australia (), mostly in arid and semi-arid regions and the tropical savannahs. Goldsbrough Mort & Co was an Australian agricultural business. History In 1843 Thomas Sutcliffe Mort established a business which operated as auctioneers and brokers in the wool trade. Sheep shearing is the process by which the woollen fleece of a sheep is cut off. The person who removes the sheep's wool is called a '' shearer''. Typically each adult sheep is shorn once each year (a sheep may be said to have been "shorn" or "sheared", depending upon dialect). The annual shearing most often occurs in a shearing shed, a facility especially designed to process often hundreds and sometimes more than 3,000 sheep per day. Sheep are shorn in all seasons, depending on the climate, management requirements and the availability of a woolclasser and shearers.
