Elsecar Main F.C. was an English association football club based in Elsecar, Barnsley, South Yorkshire. History The club was formed early in the 20th century as Elsecar Athletic and entered the FA Cup for the first time in 1906 after winning the Barnsley Minor Cup League in the previous season. They changed their name to Elsecar Main in 1908, but folded three years later. Several clubs using the same name have been in existence since, most notably the incarnation that played in the Sheffield Association League and Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League from 1964 to 1991. Elsecar (, ) is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England. It is near the villages of Jump and Wentworth and south of the town of Hoyland, south of Barnsley and north-east of Sheffield. Elsecar falls within the Barnsley MBC Ward of Hoyland Milton. Elsecar is unique as a name. It is thought to derive from the Old English personal name of ''Aelfsige'' (mentioned in Cartulary of Nostell Priory, 1259–66) and the Old Norse word kjarr, denoting a marsh or brushwood. Barnsley () is a market town in South Yorkshire, England. As the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the fourth largest settlement in South Yorkshire. In Barnsley, the population was 96,888 while the wider Borough has seen an increase of 5.8%, from 231,200 in 2011 census to 244,600 in 2021 census. The Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior Football League is an English football league that was founded in 1983 by the merger of the former Sheffield Association League and Hatchard League. 1909–10 FA Cup
The 1909–10 FA Cup was the 39th season of the world's oldest association football competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup (more usually known as the FA Cup). Newcastle United won the competition for the first time, beating Barnsley 2–0 in the replay of the final at Goodison Park in Liverpool, through two goals from Albert Shepherd. The first match, held at Crystal Palace, London, was a 1–1 draw. Matches were scheduled to be played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. If scores were level after 90 minutes had been played, a replay would take place at the stadium of the second-named team later the same week. If the replayed match was drawn further replays would be held at neutral venues until a winner was determined.
