Elsa Nielsen
Elsa Agnete Yvonne Nielsen née Bendixsen (21 September 1923 – 11 October 2011) was a Danish graphic artist. The grand-daughter of the painter Laurits Tuxen, in 1946 she married the graphic artist Palle Nielsen. Biography Born in Copenhagen, as a child she spent her holidays in the Tuxen's summerhouse in Skagen. After completing her schooling, she studied painting privately under Viggo Brandt at the Glyptotek and at Erik Clemmensen's art school. She then attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Vilhelm Lundstrøm, graduating in 1947. Her few recurring motifs include glassware, ancient female busts and, above all, withered flowers. Her drawings and prints consist of a multitude of thin vibrating lines. A member of the Corner artists association, she exhibited there from 1986. Laurits Tuxen
Laurits Regner Tuxen (9 December 1853 – 21 November 1927) was a Danish painter and sculptor specialising in figure painting. He was also associated with the Skagen Painters. He was the first head of Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler, an art school established in the 1880s to provide an alternative to the education offered by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Biography Lauritz Regner Tuxen grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was the son of Nicolai Elias Tuxen (1810–1891) and Bertha Laura Giødvad (1815–1908). His father was a naval officer and director of the Danish naval shipyard (''Orlogsværftet''). The still life-and flowerpainter Nicoline Tuxen (1847–1931) was his older sister. From 1868 to 1872, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art together with Peder Severin Krøyer (1851–1909). Palle Nielsen
Palle Louis Nielsen (8 August 1920 – 5 September 2000) was a Danish illustrator and graphic artist. Considered to be one of the masters of his times, his works include drawings, watercolours, woodcuts and linocuts. Biography Born in Copenhagen, Nielsen was brought up in the harbour area of the old town. Nielsen attended Kunsthåndværkerskolen (School of Arts and Crafts) from 1937 to 1939. Thereafter he studied privately under Aksel Jørgensen before entering the painting school at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1945–47). In 1946, he married the graphic artist Elsa Nielsen. Nielsen first exhibited at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1949. Skagen
Skagen () is Denmark's northernmost town, on the east coast of the Skagen Odde peninsula in the far north of Jutland, part of Frederikshavn Municipality in Nordjylland, north of Frederikshavn and northeast of Aalborg. The Port of Skagen is Denmark's main fishing port and it also has a thriving tourist industry, attracting 2 million people annually. The name was applied originally to the peninsula but it now also refers to the town. The settlement began during the Middle Ages as a fishing village, renowned for its herring industry. The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts ( da, Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi - Billedkunst Skolerne) has provided education in the arts for more than 250 years, playing its part in the development of the art of Denmark. History The Royal Danish Academy of Portraiture, Sculpture, and Architecture in Copenhagen was inaugurated on 31 March 1754, and given as a gift to the King Frederik V on his 31st birthday. Its name was changed to the Royal Danish Academy of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture in 1771. At the same event, Johann Friedrich Struensee introduced a new scheme in the academy to encourage artisan apprentices to take supplementary classes in drawing so as to develop the notion of "good taste". Vilhelm Lundstrøm
Vilhelm Lundstrøm (26 May 1893 – 9 May 1950) was a Danish modernist painter. He was a central figure in early Danish experimental art and introduced French cubism to Denmark. Biography Vilhelm Henry Lundstrøm was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Art where he studied under Rostrup Böyesen. He made his debut in 1918 at the Artists' Autumn Exhibition at Den Frie Udstilling in Copenhagen and participated in the exhibition Modern Art in the Art Pavilion in Aarhus. Lundstrøm spent an extended period in France in the 1920s where he was influenced by Braque, Picasso and Cézanne. Together with fellow artists Karl Larsen, Axel Salto and Svend Johansen, Lundstrøm settled in Bormes near Cannes and established the artistic group ''De Fire''. Corner Artists Association
The Corner painters in Denmark first came together in 1932 when they decided to hold an exhibition in a meeting hall inside an office building on the corner of Vester Voldgade and Studiestræde in the centre of Copenhagen. The group was soon referred to simply as Corner. Among its earlier members were Karl Bovin, Victor Brockdorff, Povl Christensen, Kaj Ejstrup, Lauritz Hartz, Alfred Simonsen, Viggo Rørup and Erik Raadal. The Eckersberg Medal (originally the ''Akademiets Aarsmedaille'' or Annual Academy Medal) is an annual award of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
