Elmwood Cemetery (Birmingham, Alabama)
Elmwood Cemetery (also known as Elm Leaf Cemetery) is a cemetery established in 1900 (as Elm Leaf Cemetery) in Birmingham, Alabama northwest of Homewood by a group of fraternal organizations. It was renamed in 1906 and gradually eclipsed Oak Hill Cemetery as the most prominent burial place in the city. In 1900 it consisted of 40 acres, adding 40 more acres in 1904, 80 more acres in 1909, 80 more acres in 1910, 43 acres in 1924, and reached 286 acres in 1928. Background In the late 1930s, Mexican sculptor Dionicio Rodriguez created a number of large concrete sculptures for the cemetery, including a palm tree, a bridge, and a fallen log 'carved' into a bench. The cemetery was whites only until 1970 when the family of a black soldier who died in Vietnam won a lawsuit in federal court to force the cemetery to allow their son to be buried there. Adams, New York
Adams is a town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. Named after President John Adams, the town had a population of 5,143 at the 2010 census. The town contains a village also named Adams. The village and town are south of Watertown. History Settlement began around 1800 at Adams village. David Smith built a sawmill at the present site of Adams in 1801. Renamed for John Adams in 1802 (the year after his presidency ended), the town of Adams was created from the survey townships of Aleppo and Orpheus. Elmwood Cemetery is the oldest active cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee. It was established in 1852 as one of the first rural cemeteries in the South. A funeral scene in Paramount's 1993 legal thriller '' The Firm'' was filmed here. Origins Elmwood Cemetery was established as part of the Rural Cemetery Movement of the early-to-mid-19th century. A classic example of a garden cemetery, it is notable for its park-like setting, sweeping vistas, shady knolls, large stands of ancient trees, and magnificent monuments. Elmwood Cemetery (Fort Smith, Arkansas)
Elmwood Cemetery, also known historically as the Poor Farm Cemetery, is a historic cemetery at Zero and South 24th Streets in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Established in 1891, it is on the grounds of Sebastian County's first poor farm, purchased by the county in 1890. It remained in use at least into the 1940s, and is the only surviving visible element of the poor farm. The cemetery contains several hundred graves, although only seven have markers. The cemetery is about in size, and is an unbounded open field in a suburban residential area. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.
