Elmstead is a village and civil parish in the Tendring district, in the English county of Essex. In 2001 the population of the civil parish of Elmstead was 1,898, decreasing to 1,855 at the 2011 Census. Parish Church of St Anne and St Lawrence The Church of England parish church is dedicated to Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary and Saint Lawrence of Rome, a leader of the Early Church and a martyr. The main parts of the church have been dated to around 1310; a South Chapel was added about 20 years later. The early 14th-century tower only rises one and a half storeys and was never completed. Elmstead Market
Elmstead Market is a village in the civil parish of Elmstead, in the Tendring district of Essex, England. It lies 3 km north-east of Wivenhoe and 6 km east of Colchester. It is on the A133 road which runs to Clacton-on-Sea to the south-east and Colchester to the west. In 2018 it had an estimated population of 1,684. Churches The Church of England parish church is dedicated to Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary and Saint Lawrence of Rome, a leader of the Early Church and a martyr. The main parts of the church have been dated to around 1310; a south chapel was added about 20 years later. The early 14th-century tower only rises one and a half storeys and was never completed. The village used to have a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, built in 1817. It was demolished in 1999 for a newer chapel to be built in its place. Elmstead is a residential district in south-east London, England, within the London Borough of Bromley and the historic county of Kent. It is located north-east of Bromley. History Toponymy The name is recorded in 1320 as ''Elmsted'' and means 'place where elm trees grow'. The name was shared with Elmstead Place mansion and the woodland of Elmstead Wood. After the local railway station opened it took the name Elmstead Woods. Geography Elmstead Wood has public access from Elmstead Lane and other locations. It lies on the Green Chain walk. It is adjacent to Sundridge Park Golf Club. Elmstead Pit, opposite the railway station, is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest which has important fossils from the Eocene epoch 50 million years ago. Elmstead Pit
Elmstead Pit is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Elmstead in the London Borough of Bromley. Formerly known as Rock Pits, it is a small area of 0.05 hectare. It is a Geological Conservation Review site. The pit exposes an important layer of the Oldhaven or Blackheath Beds laid down about 50 million years ago during the Eocene epoch. It has a rich and diverse selection of fossil fauna from a sub-tidal estuarine environment. Fossils include molluscs, sharks' teeth and fish scales. The geological features help to explain the changes in the disposition of land and sea in the London area during the Eocene. The site is located opposite Elmstead Woods railway station, and there is no public access.
