Elmer Wilsoe
Elmer Raynold "Kadè" Wilsoe (born 11 April 1943) is a Curaçaoan politician. He was Minister of Justice in the Gerrit Schotte cabinet from 2010 until 2012 for Pueblo Soberano (PS). Between 2012 and the October 2016 elections he was a member of the Estates of Curaçao for PS. Career Wilsoe was born on 11 April 1943 on Curaçao. He worked as a history teacher before turning to politics. Wilsoe was of Curaçao from 1988 to 1994. From October 2010 until 2012 he served as Minister of Justice for Pueblo Soberano (PS) in the cabinet of Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte. In the October 2012 general elections Wilsoe obtained a seat in the Estates of Curaçao. In September 2016 several pages of criminal proceedings of the Curaçaoan public prosecution service leaked out, which revealed Wilsoe to be a suspect of involvement with the murder of Pueblo Soberano leader Helmin Wiels. Gerrit Schotte
Gerrit Fransisco Schotte () (born 9 September 1974) is a Curaçaoan politician, and the current leader of the Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK). In the Curaçao general election of 27 August 2010, the MFK became the second-largest party with 5 seats in the Island Council. MFK formed an island government together with Pueblo Soberano and Partido MAN on 4 September. This coalition became the first Cabinet of Curaçao when the Netherlands Antilles was dismantled on 10 October 2010. Schotte at that point became the first Prime Minister of Curaçao. Schotte was the first Prime Minister and Minister of General Affairs of the new country of Curaçao, which became autonomous in October 2010. He is one of the youngest persons in modern history to assume the office of Prime Minister. 2016 Curaçao General Election
General elections were held in Curaçao on 5 October 2016, having been postponed from 30 September due to Hurricane Matthew. A total of thirteen parties participated. Electoral system The 21 members of the Estates are elected by proportional representation. Parties that won seats in the previous elections are allowed to participate, whilst primary elections are held to determine which other parties can run, with parties required to receive the equivalent of 1% of the vote at the previous elections in order to participate. 2012 Curaçao General Election
General elections were held in Curaçao on 19 October 2012. Early elections for the Curaçao island council were necessary as the Cabinet- Schotte lost its majority in the Estates of Curaçao. The elections were the first of the Curaçao after obtaining the status of country ( nl, land) within the Kingdom of the Netherlands upon the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010. The election saw six parties obtain one or more of the 21 seats, with Sovereign People and Movement for the Future of Curaçao both winning five. Background The Schotte-cabinet relied on a majority of 11 out of 21 seats in the Estates (the parties Movementu Futuro Korsou (MFK), Pueblo Soberano (PS) and Movishon Antia Nobo (MAN)). Helmin Wiels
Helmin Magno Wiels (9 December 1958 – 5 May 2013) was a leftist politician, anti-corruption activist and social worker from Curaçao. He served as a chairman of Sovereign People (the largest political party in the Estates after the October 2012 election) and was a vocal campaigner for Curaçao's independence from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Wiels was assassinated on 5 May 2013 following earlier written threats on his life. Elvis Kuwas, a hitman for the "No Limit Soldiers" drugs gang that had planned the assassination, was found guilty of three counts of murder (including that of Wiels) and was sentenced to life imprisonment in August 2014. George Jamaloodin
George Ranjit Mohamed Jamaloodin was Curaçao's first Minister of Finance after Curaçao obtained the status of country ( nl, land) upon the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on 10 October 2010. In the 2010 general election leading up to obtaining the status of country he was placed third on list of Movement for the Future of Curaçao (MFK), led by Gerrit Schotte, who became Curaçao's first prime minister. He was initially sentenced to 28 years for fraud and "provoking" murder. On appeal, the sentenced was increased to 30 years. Criminal charges and convictions On 24 July 2014, Jamaloodin was arrested, according to sources of NOS in relation with the murder of Sovereign People (PS) politician Helmin Wiels on 5 May 2013. Shortly thereafter he started a hunger strike to protest against his detention. On 6 August 2014 Jamaloodin was released while remaining a suspect.
