Elma, Manitoba, is an unincorporated community of approximately 100 people in southeast Manitoba. It is located on the Whitemouth River, at the junction of Highway 15 and Highway 11 in the Rural Municipality of Whitemouth. History The area settlement was originally known as Janow, named after its post office; the name was agreed upon between the store owner, John Giliewich, and the post office inspector. The preferred name, ''Yaroriw'', was turned down as the inspector thought there might be difficulty with name. The name changed to ''Elma'' after the railway was built, when the community became a railway town. This name is said to have originated from a man named Thomas Koivu and his wife Maria, who worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway and had a baby named Elma (1905)—a name the town all decided to adopt as their own. The ''Canadian'' (french: Le Canadien) is a transcontinental passenger train operated by Via Rail with service between Union Station in Toronto, Ontario and Pacific Central Station in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Before 1955, the ''Canadian'' was a Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) train between Toronto and Chicago. On April 24, 1955, CPR renamed its best transcontinental train between Montreal/Toronto and Vancouver the ''Canadian'', with new lightweight stainless-steel equipment.
