Ellen Kidd
Ellen Gertrude Tompkins Kidd (c. 1852 – February 4, 1932) was an American suffragist and businesswoman known for being the creator of Pin Money Pickles. Biography Ellen Kidd was born in Richmond, Virginia, the daughter of Edmund William Tompkins and Julia Mosby Burton Tompkins. She went to the Pegram School for Girls operated by Mary E. Pegram. On April 4, 1872, Tompkins married John Boulware Kidd, an unsuccessful grocer and widower who had previously been married to her sister. The couple raised the four children from his earlier marriage and had two daughters and seven sons, four of whom survived to adulthood. Her husband died in 1910. She died on February 4, 1932. Kidd began making pickles at her home in Richmond, Virginia in 1868 when she was sixteen years old, using her grandmother's recipe. Virginia State Fair
The State Fair of Virginia is a state fair held annually at the end of September at The Meadow Event Park in Doswell, Virginia. Through 2008, the fair was held at the Richmond Raceway Complex, located in eastern Henrico County, just outside the capital city of Richmond. It is owned by the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation. The Fair has offered rides, carnival games, concerts, and typical fair foods such as cotton candy and funnel cakes as well as Virginia's favorites barbecue chicken and peanuts. The Fair has also offered technological, agricultural, historical, and livestock exhibitions and competitions, including pig races. Several of the competitions offered scholarships to students that competed. Entertainment includes log-rolling, snake handling, magicians, pig races, chain sawing, and stilt-walking. Pullman Company
The Pullman Company, founded by George Pullman, was a manufacturer of railroad cars in the mid-to-late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century, during the boom of railroads in the United States. Through rapid late-19th century development of mass production and takeover of rivals, the company developed a virtual monopoly on production and ownership of sleeper cars. During a severe economic downturn, the 1894 Pullman Strike by company workers proved a transforming moment in American labor history. At the company's peak in the early 20th century, its cars accommodated 26 million people a year, and it in effect operated "the largest hotel in the world". The League of Women Voters (LWV or the League) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan political organization in the United States. Virginia Women's Monument
The Virginia Women's Monument is a state memorial in Richmond, Virginia commemorating the contributions of Virginia women to the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States of America. Located on the grounds of the Virginia State Capitol, the monument is officially titled Voices from the Garden: The Virginia Women's Monument and features life-sized bronze statues of eleven Virginia women placed in a small granite plaza. The monument was first proposed in 2009 and established by joint resolution of the Virginia General Assembly in 2010. An 18-member commission, along with input from the Library of Virginia and professors of women's history, selected the women to be honored with statues sculpted by StudioEIS in Brooklyn, New York.
