Elkton is an unincorporated community located in central Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. It lies along State Route 154 at the confluence of Elk Run and the Little Beaver Creek and has the ZIP code 44415. It is home to the Federal Correctional Institution, Elkton, a male low-security federal prison. Additionally, Elkton is home to one of the shortest covered bridges in the United States, the Church Hill Road Covered Bridge. History Elkton was platted in 1835. Little Beaver Creek
Little Beaver Creek is a wild and scenic area in Ohio. The Little Beaver Creek watershed is located primarily in Columbiana County in eastern Ohio, and in portions of Carroll County, Mahoning County, and western Pennsylvania, draining approximately 605 mi² (1,567 km²), of which 503 mi² (1,303 km²) are in Ohio. The watershed in total size covers an area of approximately 510 square miles, with about 80% of this being situated in Ohio. The great majority of land within the watershed is privately owned. Within the watershed are roughly 808 miles of linear streams. The creek is protected by a number of classifications, including ''Ohio Wild and Scenic River'' and ''National Scenic River'', as well as being part of Ohio's state park system. Sandy And Beaver Canal
The Sandy and Beaver Canal was a canal and lock transportation system which ran seventy-three miles from the Ohio and Erie Canal at Bolivar, Ohio, to the Ohio River at Glasgow, Pennsylvania. It was chartered in 1828 and completed twenty years later. It ceased operations in 1852. History and features In 1828, Major D.B. Douglas of the United States Military Academy surveyed potential new canal routes, including the site that would ultimately be chosen as the location for the Sandy and Beaver Canal. The canal was then chartered later that year. Completed in 1848, it had ninety locks. From the time of its opening, however, its middle section had repeated problems and ultimately fell into disrepair. The canal ceased to operate in 1852, when the Cold Run Reservoir Dam outside of Lisbon, Ohio failed, ruining a large section of the canal. State Route 154 (SR 154) is a Ohio State Route that runs between Lisbon and the Pennsylvania state line in the US state of Ohio. Some of the highway is listed on the National Highway System. Most of the route is a rural two-lane highway and passes through both farmland and woodland. The highway was first signed in 1923 on a route that is now SR 517 and SR 558. SR 154 was rerouted in 1926 to its current alignment. Two section of the highway was paved in 1929, with the rest of the route was paved in 1933.
