The Elkin Blanketeers were a minor league baseball team based in Elkin, North Carolina. The Blanketeers played as members of the Class D level Blue Ridge League from 1949 to 1950 and North Carolina State League from 1951 to 1952, winning the 1950 pennant. Elkin hosted home minor league games at Elkin Memorial Park, where a Blanketeer player was married at home plate in 1950. History The 1949 Elkin Blanketeers were the first minor league baseball team in Elkin, North Carolina. The minor league team was directly preceded by the local semipro team, the Chatham Blanketeers. The Chatham Manufacturing Company was a primary local business that engaged in the manufacturing of blankets. John Pyecha
John Nicholas Pyecha (born November 25, 1931) is an American former professional baseball player. He was a , right-handed pitcher who played six seasons (1950–1955) of minor league baseball, but made only one Major League appearance for the Chicago Cubs. On April 24, 1954, at Crosley Field, Pyecha entered the game in relief of Warren Hacker in the seventh inning with his Cubs trailing the Cincinnati Redlegs 3–2. Pyecha held the Redlegs off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings; meanwhile, Chicago rallied to take a 5–3 lead thanks to home runs by Ralph Kiner and Hank Sauer. Pyecha started the last half of the ninth inning by issuing a walk to Gus Bell, then retired Jim Greengrass and Ted Kluszewski to get within one out of the victory. Alfred Vanoide Fletcher (August 6, 1924 – March 17, 2010) was an American professional baseball player. The right-handed pitcher appeared in nine games for the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball in 1955. He stood tall and weighed . Early life Fletcher was born in East Bend, North Carolina, in 1924. His parents were Wesley E. and Rhett Fletcher. He volunteered for the United States Army and fought in World War II in the European Theater of Operations. Career After the war, Fletcher was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals' organization. Beginning in 1949, he played for several minor league baseball teams, including the Elkin Blanketeers, Vancouver Capilanos, and Seattle Rainiers.
