Elk Valley Rancheria, California
The Elk Valley Rancheria is a rancheria and federally recognized tribe of Tolowa and Yurok people. It is located in the CDP of Bertsch-Oceanview, Del Norte County, California, just east of Crescent City. As of the 2010 Census the population was 99. Education The ranchería is served by the Del Norte County Unified School District. History Elk Valley Ranchera was originally founded in the early twentieth century with the intent to provide for displaced Native Americans. The ranchera was held in trust by the United States until the California Ranchera Termination Act in 1958. In 1983, Hardwick V. United States created the "1983 Stipulation" allowed Elk Valley Ranchera to reform their lands into a United States held trust and be recognized as a tribe. Tolowa
The Tolowa people or Taa-laa-wa Dee-ni’ are a Native American people of the Athabaskan-speaking ethno-linguistic group. Two rancherias (Smith River and Elk Valley) still reside in their traditional territory in northwestern California. Those removed to the Siletz Reservation in Oregon are located there. Yurok People
The Yurok (Karuk language: Yurúkvaarar / Yuru Kyara - "downriver Indian; i.e. Yurok Indian") are an Indigenous people from along the Klamath River and Pacific coast, whose homelands are located in present-day California stretching from Trinidad in the south to Crescent City in the north. The Yurok live on the Yurok Indian Reservation, Resighini Rancheria, and surrounding communities in Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity counties. Although the reservation comprises some of contiguous land along the Klamath River, only about of scattered plots are under partial tribal ownership. Most Yurok land is owned by timber corporations or is part of national parks and forests. This forest management has significantly dis-empowered the Yurok people and disrupted their ability to access natural resources, land, and practice Indigenous lifeways. Crescent City, California
Crescent City (Tolowa: ''Taa-’at-dvn''; Yurok: ''Kohpey''; Wiyot: ''Daluwagh'') is the only incorporated city in Del Norte County, California; it is also the county seat. Named for the crescent-shaped stretch of sandy beach south of the city, Crescent City had a total population of 6,673 in the 2020 census, down from 7,643 in the 2010 census. The population includes inmates at Pelican Bay State Prison, also within the city limits, and the former census-designated place Crescent City North annexed to the city. The city is also the site of the Redwood National Park headquarters, as well as the historic Battery Point Light. Del Norte Unified School District is a State school, public school district serving Del Norte County, California, Del Norte County, California, United States. It has an enrollment of 3,679 students across eleven schools: eight elementary schools, a middle school, and two high schools. The superintendent is Jeff Harris. Del Norte High School and Crescent Elk Middle School, within the district, are among the few schools that provide instruction in the Yurok language.
