Elk River (California)
The Elk River is a river in the U.S. state of California, originating at elevation in forested highlands southeast of Eureka, California. The north and south forks combine to flow into Humboldt Bay on the south edge of Eureka. The river was called ''Ka-sha-reh'' by the Wiyot people, but received its present name after Josiah Gregg's party enjoyed a meal of elk meat near the river on Christmas, 1849. Humboldt Bay
Humboldt Bay is a natural bay and a multi-basin, bar-built coastal lagoon located on the rugged North Coast of California, entirely within Humboldt County, United States. It is the largest protected body of water on the West Coast between San Francisco Bay and Puget Sound, the second-largest enclosed bay in California, and the largest port between San Francisco and Coos Bay, Oregon. The largest city adjoining the bay is Eureka, the regional center and county seat of Humboldt County, followed by the city of Arcata. The Wiyot (Wiyot language, Wiyot: Wíyot, Tolowa language, Chetco-Tolowa: Wee-’at xee-she or Wee-yan’ Xee-she’, Tututni language, Euchre Creek Tututni: Wii-yat-dv-ne - "Mad River People“, Yurok language, Yurok: Weyet) are an indigenous people of California living near Humboldt Bay, California and a small surrounding area. Josiah Gregg
Josiah Gregg (19 July 1806 – 25 February 1850) was an American merchant, explorer, naturalist, and author of '' Commerce of the Prairies'', about the American Southwest and parts of northern Mexico. He collected many previously undescribed plants on his merchant trips and during the Mexican–American War, for which he has often been credited in botanical nomenclature. After the war he went to California, where he reportedly died of a fall from his mount due to starvation near Clear Lake on 25 February 1850, following a cross-country expedition which fixed the location of Humboldt Bay.
