Elizabeth Lawrence (author)
Elizabeth Lawrence (May 5, 1904 – June 11, 1985), was an American horticulture writer and landscape architect. In 1932, she became the first woman to graduate with a degree in Landscape Architecture from (present-day) North Carolina State University. She is best known for her columns and books on Southern gardening. Lawrence wrote for '' House & Garden'', ''The American Home'', and ''Southern Home and Garden'', and more than 700 columns for ''The Charlotte Observer''. Marietta, Georgia
Marietta is a city in and the county seat of Cobb County, Georgia, United States. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 60,972. The 2019 estimate was 60,867, making it one of Atlanta's largest suburbs. Marietta is the fourth largest of the principal cities by population of the Atlanta metropolitan area. History Etymology The origin of the name is uncertain. It is believed that the city was named for Mary Cobb, the wife of the U.S. Senator and Superior Court judge Thomas Willis Cobb. The county is named for Cobb. Early settlers Homes were built by early settlers near the Cherokee town of Big Shanty (now Kennesaw) before 1824. The first plot was laid out in 1833. The practice of landscape architecture includes: site analysis, site inventory, site planning, land planning, planting design, grading, storm water management, sustainable design, construction specification, and ensuring that all plans meet the current building codes and local and federal ordinances. Wing Haven Gardens and Bird Sanctuary is a garden and habitat for birds and wildlife located in Charlotte, North Carolina. It includes the Elizabeth Lawrence House & Garden, which is the site of a garden writer’s living laboratory. The site also includes the SEED Wildlife & Children’s Gardens, which provides hands-on exploratory learning and a natural habitat for local wildlife. History Wing Haven Gardens & Bird Sanctuary was established in 1927 by Elizabeth and Edwin Clarkson. In 1971, the couple donated the garden and house to the Wing Haven Foundation. The Clarksons remained in the home until 1988.
