Elizabeth Kerr
Elizabeth Kerr (August 15, 1912 – January 13, 2000) was an American actress, theatre producer and director. Early years Kerr was born in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of John and Anna Kerr. She attended Northwestern University and the University of Kansas. As a girl, she dreamed of being an actress, but family responsibilities prevented her from doing so until she was a grandmother. After she married, she wrote reviews of books and plays for the newspaper that she and her husband owned. She also read book reviews at meetings of women's clubs, which she said helped to prepare her for acting. ''Redhead'' is a musical with music composed by Albert Hague and lyrics by Dorothy Fields, who with her brother, Herbert, along with Sidney Sheldon and David Shaw wrote the book/libretto. Set in London in the 1880s, around the time of Jack the Ripper, the musical is a murder mystery in the setting of a wax museum. Productions and background Herbert and Dorothy Fields wrote the musical, then titled ''The Works'' for Beatrice Lillie. When Sidney Sheldon joined the writing team, it was rewritten for Gwen Verdon, who just had two smash hits on Broadway (''Damn Yankees'' and ''New Girl in Town''). Verdon took the lead on the condition that Bob Fosse would be the director as well as choreographer, making this his debut as a director. ''The Conquering Hero'' is a musical with a music by Mark Charlap, lyrics by Norman Gimbel, and book by Larry Gelbart.
