Petter's Tufted-tailed Rat
Petter's tufted-tailed rat (''Eliurus petteri'') is a rodent in the genus '' Eliurus'' found in lowland eastern Madagascar. First described in 1994, it is most closely related to the smaller '' Eliurus grandidieri''. Virtually nothing is known of its natural history, except that it occurs in rainforest and is nocturnal and solitary. It is threatened by destruction and fragmentation of its habitat and is listed as " Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List. With a head and body length of , ''Eliurus petteri'' is a moderately large species of ''Eliurus''. Its upperparts are gray-brown to gray and contrast sharply with the white underparts. The tail tuft, a characteristic feature of ''Eliurus'', is weakly developed. The skull is delicate and the incisive foramina (openings in the front part of the palate) are short and narrow. The incisors are weak. Taxonomy ''Eliurus petteri'' was first described in 1994 by American zoologist Michael Carleton as part of a revision of the genus '' Eliurus ...

Nesomyidae
The Nesomyidae are a family of African rodents in the large and complex superfamily Muroidea. It includes several subfamilies, all of which are native to either continental Africa or to Madagascar. Included in this family are Malagasy rodents, climbing mice, African rock mice, swamp mice, pouched rats, and the white-tailed rat. Characteristics Nesomyids are small- to medium-sized rodents, with the largest being the size of a rat. Physically, they may resemble mice, rats, voles, or hamsters, depending on the species and subfamily. Their diets vary from fairly strict herbivory to nearly pure insectivory. Their habits are similarly variable, with some species climbing trees, and others burrowing in the ground. They give birth to up to four young after a gestation period around six weeks. Classification Many of these animals were once thought to be related to other groups of muroid rodents, but this African-based clade has been proposed and confirmed on the basis of genetic ...

Daniel's Tufted-tailed Rat
Daniel's tufted-tailed rat (''Eliurus danieli'') is a species of rodent in the family Nesomyidae. It was discovered in 2003 in the Parc National de l’Isalo in south-central Madagascar.Carleton, M.D., and S.M. Goodman. 2007. A New Species of the ''Eliurus majori'' Complex (Rodentia: Muroidea: Nesomyidae) from South-central Madagascar, with Remarks on Emergent Species Groupings in the Genus ''Eliurus''. ''American Museum Novitates'' 3547: 1–21/ref> It is named for Daniel Rakotondravony, professor of animal biology at the University of Antananarivo, Madagascar. Daniel's tufted-tailed rat first became known in 1995, when a specimen was found to belong to the ''majori-penicillatus'' complex. Molecular data suggested that Major's tufted-tailed rat (''Eliurus majori'') was a close relative; study of two more animals found in 2002 indicated that the two are different species. Description The head-and-body length of Daniel's tufted-tailed rat is about and the tail is a further . T ...

Eliurus Carletoni
The Ankarana Special Reserve tufted-tailed rat (''Eliurus carletoni'') (synonymous with ''Eliurus'' sp. SAJ-2009a) is a species of rodent in the family Nesomyidae. It was first described in 2009. It is endemic to Madagascar, in the Ankarana Special Reserve. Distribution and morphology ''E. carletoni'' is a relatively new species restricted to Northern Madagascar. The species was named in honor of Dr. Michael Carleton of the National Museum of Natural History for his substantial influence in the study of rodent systematics and of rodents native to the island of Madagascar. Currently, ''E. carletoni'' is endemic to the Réserve Spéciale (RS) d’Ankarana. Madagascar is widely known for its unique biomes and biota. The genus ''Eliurus'' is part of the order Rodentia and the family Nesomyidae. ''E. carletoni'' can be characterized by the following: Overall, the texture of body hair is soft and fine. Cover hairs of the dorsum are bi-colored (proximal two-thirds is dark brown, and th ...

Eliurus Penicillatus
The white-tipped tufted-tailed rat (''Eliurus penicillatus'') is a rodent endemic to Madagascar. It is known from only two specimens, one collected from Ampitambe forest in 1895 or 1896 and the second in 2000. It is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as an endangered species due to habitat loss. Taxonomy The type specimen was collected in 1895 or 1896 and described by British zoologist Oldfield Thomas in 1908. It has been considered to be a specimen of Major's tufted-tailed rat ('' Eliurus majori'') but new information confirmed the original identification. This species differs from ''E. majori'' by its white-tipped caudal tuft. Habitat and distribution Little is known about the white-tipped tufted-tailed rat because it is known from only two specimens. The first was collected in 1895 or 1896 from the Ampitambe forest, near Ambositra in Fianarantsoa Province and a second north-east of Fandriana in the Fandriana–Marolambo corridor in 2000. Bo ...
