Elisabeth Sobotka
Elisabeth Sobotka (born 7 October 1965) is an Austrian woman opera director and since January 2015, director of the Bregenzer Festspiele. Life Born in Vienna, Sobotka studied musicology at the University of Vienna and graduated in 1990 with a thesis on the conductor Franco Faccio. Afterwards, she worked in the artistic management offices of the Salzburger Festspiele and the Musikalische Jugend Österreichs (Jeunesse) in Vienna. In 1992, brought her to Leipzig, where she worked for two and a half years with Udo Zimmermann. From 1994, she was chief coordinator of the Wiener Staatsoper for eight years. In autumn 2002, she was engaged by Daniel Barenboim and as opera director of the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden. From 2009 to 2014, Sobotka was artistic director of the Graz Opera. Bregenzer Festspiele
Bregenzer Festspiele (; Bregenz Festival) is a performing arts festival which is held every July and August in Bregenz in Vorarlberg (Austria). It features a large floating stage which is situated on Lake Constance. History The Festival became an international event in its first year 1946, one year after World War II. People from Germany, Switzerland and France came to the festival. Two stages were created out of floating barges. One barge for the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the other barge for carrying stage structures. The Vienna Symphony Orchestra is the biggest contributor to the Festival. This orchestra has a performance spot every year since the beginning of the festival. They have their own stage area and other venues used thorough out the festival. Every year the orchestra has a different conductor for each piece because it is considered the conductors performance. Manon Lescaut (Puccini)
''Manon Lescaut'' () is an Italian-language opera in four acts composed by Giacomo Puccini between 1889 and 1892 to a libretto by Luigi Illica, Marco Praga and , based on the 1731 novel '' Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux, et de Manon Lescaut'' by the Abbé Prévost. The opera was first performed in 1893 in Turin, at the Teatro Regio. Composition history The libretto is in Italian, and was cobbled together by five librettists whom Puccini employed: Ruggero Leoncavallo, Marco Praga, Giuseppe Giacosa, and Luigi Illica. The publisher, Giulio Ricordi, and the composer himself also contributed to the libretto. So confused was the authorship of the libretto that no one was credited on the title page of the original score. Marco Arturo Marelli (born 21 August 1949) is a Swiss set designer and stage director who has worked at European opera houses for opera and ballet. He designed sets for ballets by John Neumeier, and for premieres of the operas ''Thomas Chatterton'' by Matthias Pintscher at the Semperoper in Dresden (1998) and ''Medea'' by Aribert Reimann at the Vienna State Opera (2010). Career Born in Zurich on 21 August 1949, Marelli trained at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich to be a graphic designer. He assisted several set designers at the Wiener Volksoper and the Vienna State Opera, including Günther Schneider-Siemssen. ''The Tales of Hoffmann'' (French: ) is an by Jacques Offenbach. The French libretto was written by Jules Barbier, based on three short stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann, who is the protagonist of the story. It was Offenbach's final work; he died in October 1880, four months before the premiere. Composition history and sources Offenbach saw a play, , written by Barbier and Michel Carré and produced at the Odéon Theatre in Paris in 1851. After returning from America in 1876, Offenbach learned that Barbier had adapted the play, which had now set to music at the Opéra. Salomon handed the project to Offenbach. Work proceeded slowly, interrupted by the composition of profitable lighter works. Offenbach had a premonition, like Antonia, the heroine of Act 2, that he would die prior to its completion.
