Eliphalet Spurr House
The Eliphalet Spurr House is a historic house located at 103 Walnut Street in Brookline, Massachusetts, United States. Description and history The -story wood-frame house was built in 1798 by Eliphalet Spurr, who was locally prominent as one of the first operators of a local coach service, providing transport to Boston (which then required a roundabout trip via Roxbury and the Boston Neck). It is the oldest building in the Pill Hill, and one of the town's few 18th century Georgian houses. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 17, 1985. Boston Neck
The Boston Neck or Roxbury Neck was an isthmus, a narrow strip of land connecting the then-peninsular city of Boston to the mainland city of Roxbury (now a neighborhood of Boston). The surrounding area was gradually filled in as the city of Boston expanded in population (see History of Boston). The land formerly composing the neck is part of the neighborhood now known as the South End. History The Boston Neck was originally about wide at normal high tide. The first wave of settlers built a wooden town gate and earthen wall on the neck in about 1631 to prevent attacks from natives and to keep out unwanted animals and people. The gate was constantly guarded and usually locked during certain times during the evening. No residents could enter or leave during that period. Pill Hill, also known as "High Street Hill," is a neighborhood of Brookline, Massachusetts, United States, and part of Greater Boston. History Pill Hill became part of Brookline in 1844, when it was annexed from Boston. Noted abolitionist Samuel Philbrick lived in Brookline at 182 Walnut Street during the mid-19th century. His home eventually became a stop for the Underground Railroad. Like other Pill Hills in the United States, Pill Hill in Brookline was nicknamed for the large numbers of doctors in the neighborhood. That was likely due to its proximity to hospitals in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area of Boston. "High Street Hill" is the older and more formal name for the neighborhood.
