Elijah Hayward
Elijah Hayward (November 17, 1786 – September 22, 1864) was a lawyer in the U.S. State of Ohio who represented his county in the Ohio House of Representatives, sat on the Ohio Supreme Court for a short time, and was Commissioner of the General Land Office. He was a noted genealogist and historian. Early life Elijah Hayward was born in 1786 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He was descended from Thomas Hayward, one of the original proprietors of Bridgewater, who immigrated from England in 1634. His mother's ancestor came on the same ship passage. Hayward attended the village schools, and in 1801 entered Bridgewater Academy, where he learned English grammar and arithmetic for three months. Starting in late 1801, Hayward worked in stores in West Bridgewater, and later Plymouth. In 1803, he went to Hanover, to learn shipbuilding. Nahum Mitchell
Nahum Mitchell (February 12, 1769 – August 1, 1853) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts. Born in 1769 in the eastern portion of Bridgewater (which would later be incorporated as a separate municipality in 1823) in Massachusetts Bay, Mitchell attended the local school. He graduated from Harvard University in 1789. He studied law in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts. He served as member of the State house of representatives 1798-1802. Mitchell was elected as a Federalist to the Eighth Congress (March 4, 1803 – March 3, 1805). Puritanism
The Puritans were English Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries who sought to purify the Church of England of Roman Catholic practices, maintaining that the Church of England had not been fully reformed and should become more Protestant. Reuben Wood
Reuben Wood (1792/1793October 1, 1864) was a Democratic politician from the U.S. state of Ohio. He served as the 21st governor of Ohio. Biography Wood was born near Middletown, Rutland County, Vermont in either 1792 or 1793. While living with an uncle in Canada after his father died, Wood was conscripted into the Canadian Army at the outset of the War of 1812, but escaped across Lake Ontario and briefly served in the Vermont militia. Career Wood moved to Cleveland, Ohiothen a tiny village of 600 residentsin 1818 with his wife and infant daughter. He reputedly arrived with only $1.25 left to his name to work as a lawyer. The position of State Librarian of Ohio was created with the creation of the first State Library of Ohio in 1821.
