Elihu W. Baldwin
Elihu Whittlesey Baldwin (born Durham, New York, Durham, New York (state), New York, December 25, 1789; died Crawfordsville, Indiana, Crawfordsville, Indiana, October 15, 1840) was a prominent American Presbyterian minister and the first president of Wabash College. Life Elihu Baldwin was the second of six children of Deacon Jonathan Baldwin (1758-1843) and his wife Submit (Lord) (1764-1855). The Baldwins had moved from Durham, Connecticut, Durham, Connecticut to a new settlement in Durham, New York and later continued to move west, spending the end of their lives in Atwater, Ohio, Atwater, Ohio. The Baldwins were joined in Durham by Jonathan's brother Seth and his family, including future missionary Dwight Baldwin (missionary), Dwight Baldwin (1798-1886). Durham is a town in Greene County, New York, United States. The town was established from part of the town of Coxsackie in 1790 as the "Town of Freehold". In the spring of 1800, Freehold became part of the newly formed Greene County. The town's name was changed to "Durham" in 1805, the town having been called informally "New Durham" by the many settlers from Connecticut. Part of the town was lost in 1803 to form the new towns of Cairo, Greenville, and Windham. In 1836, the western part of Durham became the town of Conesville in Schoharie County.
