Godolphin (Arabic: جودلفين) is the Maktoum family's private Thoroughbred horseracing stable and was named in honour of the Godolphin Arabian, who came from the desert to become one of the three founding stallions of the modern Thoroughbred. Godolphin is buried at Wandlebury Park in Cambridge, where there is a stone to commemorate this horse in the passageway of the old buildings. The Dubai World Cup (Arabic: كأس دبي العالمي) is a Thoroughbred horse race held annually since 1996 and contested at the Meydan Racecourse (Arabic: ميدان) which in Arabic suggests a place where people congregate and compete, a sort of meeting point in the Emirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The race is operated through the Emirates Racing Authority (ERA) whose Chairman is Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs of the United Arab Emirates. International Stakes
The International Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at York over a distance of 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 56 yards (2,063 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in August. History The event was devised by Major Leslie Petch, a former Clerk of the Course at York. It was first run in 1972, but by this time Petch had resigned from his position due to ill health. The race was originally sponsored by Benson and Hedges and called the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup. The inaugural running was won by Roberto, that year's Derby winner. Red Ransom
Red Ransom (foaled 1987 in Virginia, died 2009) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. In his 2006 book ''Designing Speed in the Racehorse'', author Ken McLean wrote that Red Ransom "was a sensationally fast juvenile." Bred by Paul Mellon and raced under his Rokeby Stables banner, he was sired by the 1972 Epsom Derby winner, Roberto. His dam was Arabia, a daughter of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Damascus. Conditioned for racing by Hall of Fame trainer, MacKenzie Miller, on August 3, 1989 the two-year-old Red Ransom won his debut race while setting a new Saratoga Race Course record for five furlongs. He made his second start in early September at Belmont Park, scoring another win in a six furlong allowance race. However, the colt suffered an injury to a shin that kept him out of racing until early March 1990. Al Maktoum Challenge, Round 3
The Al Maktoum Challenge, Round 3, is a horse race run over a distance of 2,000 metres (one and a quarter miles) on dirt in March at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. It is the third of three races in the Al Maktoum Challenge series which serve as trial races for the Dubai World Cup. It was first run in 1994 on dirt at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. It was transferred to Meydan in 2010 where it was run on the synthetic Tapeta Footings surface. In 2015 the synthetic surface at Meydan was replaced by a dirt track. The race was originally run over 52,400 metres before he current distance was established in 1996. The race began as an ungraded stakes race before attaining Listed status in 1996. The race was elevated to Group 3 level in 2000 and became a Group 2 event in 2002. The race became a Group 1 event in 2012. The Gran Premio di Milano is a Group 2 flat horse race in Italy open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Milan over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. The Premio Carlo d'Alessio is a Group 3 flat horse race in Italy open to thoroughbreds aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles) at Capannelle in May. History The race was originally called the Premio Ellington. It was named after Ellington, the sire of a leading 19th-century broodmare in Picciola, Italy. The Gran Premio d'Italia is a Listed flat horse race in Italy open to three-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at Milan over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. History The event was established in 1921, and it was initially contested over 1,800 metres. It was run over 2,000 metres in 1926 and 1927, and extended to 2,400 metres in 1928. The present system of race grading was introduced in the early 1970s, and for a period the Gran Premio d'Italia was classed at Group 1 level. During the late 1980s and early 1990s it took place in September. The race was downgraded in 1996, and cut to 2,000 metres in 1997. Ouija Board (horse)
Ouija Board (3 March 2001 – 29 November 2022) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. She was owned by Edward Stanley, 19th Earl of Derby, and trained by Ed Dunlop and Chris Hinson. In a career spanning four seasons, she won 10 of her 22 races, seven of them Group 1s, including the Oaks in 2004 and the Hong Kong Vase in 2005, while amassing over £3 million in prize money. In 2004, she won the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and came second to Intercontinental the following year. In 2006, she regained her crown, becoming the second horse to win Breeders' Cup races in non-consecutive years. Her silks were black, with a white cap and a single white button below the collar. The Prince of Wales's Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 1 mile 1 furlong and 212 yards (2,004 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in June. History The event was established in 1862, and it was named after the Prince of Wales at that time, the future King Edward VII. The original version was restricted to three-year-olds, and it was contested over 1 mile and 5 furlongs. The race was discontinued after World War II, when there was no Prince of Wales.
