Electricity (Scotland) Act 1979
The Electricity (Scotland) Act 1979 (c. 11) was an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which consolidated enactments relating to the Scottish electricity boards and removed certain anomalies. Background The Scottish Law Commission had reviewed the operation of electricity supply industry in Scotland that had been established by the Electricity Act 1947. The Commission noted a number of anomalies in the operation of the law with respect to electricity supply. There were five principal issues: * Constitution and functions of electricity boards. * Authorisation to supply electricity in another area or district where the agreement of the other board concerned cannot be obtained. * Powers of entry on land. * Directions as to the use and disposal of certain assets. * Offences. South Of Scotland Electricity Board
The South of Scotland Electricity Board (SSEB) generated, transmitted and distributed electricity throughout the south of Scotland, including the former regions of Strathclyde, Lothian, Fife, Central, Borders and Dumfries and Galloway and a few towns in northern England. It operated from 1955 to 1991. Electricity Act 1989
The Electricity Act 1989 (c. 29) provided for the privatisation of the electricity supply industry in Great Britain, by replacing the Central Electricity Generating Board in England and Wales and by restructuring the South of Scotland Electricity Board and the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. The Act also established a licensing regime and a regulator for the industry called the Office of Electricity Regulation (OFFER), which has since become the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM). Electricity And Gas Act 1963
The Electricity and Gas Act 1963 (c. 59) is an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which increased the amounts that could be borrowed by the Electricity Council, the electricity boards, the Gas Council, and the area gas boards. It enabled monetary advances to be made to these bodies, and provided for members of the bodies to be recompensed. Background Reports on the gas industry in 1960 and the electricity industry in 1963 had been published by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Nationalised Industries. Both reports provided insights into the progress and problems of the industries. They identified that future expenditure was likely to be greater than budgeted by earlier legislation. The North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board (1943–1990) was founded to design, construct and manage hydroelectricity projects in the Highlands of Scotland. It is regarded as one of the major achievements of Scottish politician Thomas Johnston, who chaired the board from 1945 to 1959. The Gas and Electricity Act 1968 (c. 39) is an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom which extended the powers of the Gas Council, the area gas boards and the Electricity Council to borrow money, including foreign currency, to meet their obligations; it permitted statutory gas and electricity bodies to render technical aid overseas; and allowed further member  appointments to the Electricity Council.
