Electoral District Of Upper Hunter
Upper Hunter is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. The seat is currently held by Dave Layzell for the National Party after he was elected at a by-election to replace Michael Johnsen. Upper Hunter covers the entirety of Dungog Shire, Muswellbrook Shire, Upper Hunter Shire, Liverpool Plains Shire (excluding the area around Werris Creek), the northern half of Singleton Shire (including Singleton itself), northeastern Mid-Western Regional Council (including Bylong) and part of Mid-Coast Council. History In 1859, Upper Hunter replaced the Electoral district of Phillip, Brisbane and Bligh, established in the first Parliament in 1856. It had two members from 1880 to 1894. It was abolished in 1894 and largely replaced by Robertson and Singleton. In 1904 Robertson was abolished and Upper Hunter was recreated. John Creed (politician)
John Mildred Creed (21 November 1842 – 30 October 1930), commonly referred to as J. Mildred Creed, was an English-born Australian doctor and politician. Early life Creed was born at Ashbrook (Ampney St Mary), near Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England and educated at Cowley, Gloucestershire and Kingsdown College, Bristol. He migrated with his family to Melbourne in 1861 but returned to England to study medicine. He qualified M.R.C.S. from University College, London and L.R.C.P. from University of Edinburgh in 1866. Career Creed returned to Australia and was appointed resident physician at the Sydney Infirmary. In 1867 he was appointed medical officer on the Cadell expedition to the Northern Territory. In April 1868 Creed was registered by the New South Wales Medical Board, and he established a practice at Scone and served as a magistrate. Robert Fitzgerald (Australian Politician)
Robert George Dundas Fitzgerald (5 January 1846 – 24 December 1933) was a New Zealand-born Australian politician. He was born at Auckland to cotton planter Robert Appleyard Fitzgerald and Isabella Stevenson. The family moved to New South Wales in 1851 and Fitzgerald attended Sydney Grammar School and also a private school at Muswellbrook. He then became a solicitor's clerk in Maitland and was admitted a solicitor in 1869. In 1870 he married Elizabeth Frances Mary Batten, with whom he had a daughter. He established a partnership in Muswellbrook, and served as a local alderman (1871–73, 1878–80, 1885–86) and mayor (1878–79). In 1885 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as one of the two members for Upper Hunter. John McLaughlin (Australian Politician)
John McLaughlin (5 June 1850 – 5 February 1918) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in Westmeath to Daniel and Anne McLaughlin. The family migrated to New South Wales around 1852 and settled in the Hunter region. McLaughlin attended school at Maitland and then went to Lyndhurst College in Sydney. He became a solicitor's clerk in October 1874 and was admitted as a solicitor two months later. In 1882 he married Ada Moore, with whom he had four children. In 1880 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Upper Hunter. He was defeated in 1885, but continued contesting elections for the next decade, becoming associated first with the Free Trade Party and then with the Protectionists. In 1895 he was elected the independent protectionist member for Raleigh. He retired in 1901, although he did later contest Raleigh once more in 1907 as an independent Liberal. John McElhone
John McElhone (16 June 1833 – 6 May 1898) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sydney to milk vendor Terence McElhone and Catherine Mallon. He attended St Mary's Seminary School and was an apprentice seaman from 1851. In 1859 he was a commercial agent, and from 1867 to 1872 he was a merchant dealing with hide and tallow. On 5 February 1862 he married Mary Jane Browne, with whom he had nine children. Two of his sons, William Percy (1871–1932) and Arthur Joseph (1868–1946), each served as Lord Mayor of Sydney. A Sydney City alderman from 1878 to 1882, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1875 as the member for Upper Hunter. In 1882 he was concurrently elected for both Upper Hunter and East Sydney, resigning from East Sydney shortly after. Thomas Hungerford (Australian Politician)
Thomas Hungerford (6 September 1823 – 4 May 1904) was a pioneer pastoralist and politician in Australia. He was a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Early life Hungerford was born near Cork to Captain Emanuel Hungerford and Catherine Loan(e). The family migrated to New South Wales in 1828, and his father settled on the Hunter River. Hungerford became a pastoralist, owning property near Walgett and inheriting his father's Hunter property in 1852. On 19 June 1852 he married Emma Hollingsworth Wood, with whom he had nine children; a second marriage to Catherine Mary Mallon produced six children.
