Electoral District Of Canterbury
Canterbury is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, currently represented by Sophie Cotsis of the Labor Party. Canterbury includes the suburbs of Campsie, Canterbury, Clemton Park, Earlwood, Hurlstone Park, Undercliffe and parts of Ashbury, Belfield, Belmore, Beverly Hills, Kingsgrove and Roselands. History Canterbury was created in 1859, replacing part of Cumberland (South Riding), named after and including the then town, now Sydney suburb, of Canterbury. It was bordered on the east by Glebe and Newtown, and from 1880, Balmain and Redfern and stretched in the north to Drummoyne and Rhodes, south to Georges River and west to a line between Salt Pan Creek and Homebush Bay. It was a multi-member electorate, electing two members until 1882 and then four members until the abolition of multi-member electorates in 1894, when it was split into Canterbury, Ashfield, Burwood, Petersham and St George. William Henson (Australian Politician)
William Henson (1 August 1826 – 19 March 1903) was a politician and gold miner in New South Wales, Australia. Early life He was born in Sydney to soldier William Henson and Caroline Blades. His father was a soldier in the 3rd buffs who had been sent to New South Wales on detachment and remained, setting up business in George Street but dying while his children were still young. The younger William was educated at St Phillips School at Church Hill and then managed a sheep station. He spent time on the goldfields at Ophir and Bendigo, meeting with enough success to settle comfortably at Ashfield. He married Mary Ann Massey on 9 January 1855, and they had 4 daughters and 2 sons. William Pigott
William Hilson Pigott (10 March 183913 March 1909) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in London to cabinet maker John Allpress Pigott and Margaret Hilson. His family moved to New South Wales in 1841 and Pigott became a solicitor's clerk, qualifying as a solicitor in 1863. In 1863 he married Laura Jane West, with whom he had two sons; a second marriage in 1883 to Louisa Matilda Jones produced a daughter. He practised as a solicitor in Grafton until joining a Sydney firm in 1864. A long-serving Petersham alderman, he was the first mayor from 1872 to 1880. In 1880 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Canterbury, serving until his resignation in 1884, due to ill health. He was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council in 1887, serving until 1907. He was president of the Incorporated Law Institute of New South Wales from 1892 until 1908. Henry Parkes
Sir Henry Parkes, (27 May 1815 – 27 April 1896) was a colonial Australian politician and longest non-consecutive Premier of the Colony of New South Wales, the present-day state of New South Wales in the Commonwealth of Australia. He has been referred to as the "Father of Federation" due to his early promotion for the federation of the six colonies of Australia, as an early critic of British convict transportation and as a proponent for the expansion of the Australian continental rail network. Parkes delivered his famous Tenterfield Oration in 1889, which yielded a federal conference in 1890 and a Constitutional Convention in 1891, the first of a series of meetings that led to the federation of Australia.
