Electoral Division Of Goyder
Goyder is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1990, and is named after George Goyder, the South Australian surveyor responsible for carrying out the first freehold surveys in the area. Goyder encompasses large rural areas south of Darwin, covering 9,770 km², and taking in the towns of Bees Creek, Cox Peninsula, Virginia, Marlows Lagoon and parts of Berry Springs and Humpty Doo. When first created, it was even larger extending south to Pine Creek and east to Jabiru and the whole of Kakadu National Park. There were 5,583 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2020. Goyder was considered a staunch conservative electorate and a very safe seat for the Country Liberal Party for most of its history. Kezia Purick
Kezia Dorcas Tibisay Purick (born 12 May 1958) is an Australian politician. She is an Independent (politics), independent member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, having held her seat of Electoral division of Goyder, Goyder since the 2008 Northern Territory general election, 2008 election. Prior to entering Parliament, Purick was the CEO of the NT Minerals Council for 16 years. Originally elected as a member of the Country Liberal Party, she became an independent in 2015. She served as Speaker of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly since the CLP's victory in the 2012 Northern Territory general election, 2012 Territory election, a post she retained after leaving the CLP. The Country Liberal Party of the Northern Territory (CLP) is a centre-right political party in Australia's Northern Territory. In local politics it operates in a two-party system with the Australian Labor Party (ALP). It also contests federal elections as an affiliate of the Liberal Party of Australia and National Party of Australia, the two partners in the federal coalition. The CLP originated in 1971 as a division of the Australian Country Party (later renamed the National Party), the first local branches of which were formed in 1966. Denis Burke (Australian Politician)
Denis Gabriel Burke (born 22 September 1948) is a former Australian politician. A former Australian Army officer, he served as a Country Liberal Party member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 2005. He spent two years as Chief Minister after succeeding Shane Stone, but oversaw the CLP's defeat at the 2001 election, ending 27 years of continuous CLP government in the Northern Territory. Burke later served as Opposition Leader from 2001 to 2003 before being toppled, but was re-elected as leader in 2005. He subsequently took the party to its largest-ever defeat at the 2005 election, culminating in the shock loss of his own seat. Edward John Warren is a former Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Goyder in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2005 to 2008. Warren was a geotechnical and geological engineering consultant before his entry into politics, working in both the Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea. His first foray into politics was an unsuccessful run for the seat of Jingili in 1984. Warren was elected as part of Labor's 2005 landslide win after Country Liberal incumbent Peter Maley was disendorsed just a month before the election. MacDonnell was an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was created in 1974, and derived its name from the nearby MacDonnell Ranges. MacDonnell was an almost entirely rural electorate, covering 333,398.61 km², and taking in the resort town of Yulara, and the remote communities of Hermannsburg, Kintore, Papunya and Docker River. There were 4,842 people enrolled within the electorate as of 2011. MacDonnell was generally a safe seat for the Labor Party, due to its large indigenous population, but there have been three exceptions: from 1974 to 1977 (when there were no ALP members in the Assembly); from 1997 to 2005, when several factors helped deliver the seat to the Country Liberal Party candidate, who then managed to use his incumbency to his advantage and thus retain the seat at the following election. The Australian Labor Party (Northern Territory Branch), commonly known as Territory Labor, is the Northern Territory branch of the Australian Labor Party. It has been the governing party of the Northern Territory since winning the 2016 election under Michael Gunner. It previously held office from 2001 to 2012. Peter Maley
Peter John Maley (born 2 August 1969) is a controversial former Australian politician, barrister, solicitor and magistrate. He was the member for Goyder in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2005, primarily as a member of the Country Liberal Party, but also for a short period as an independent member. Maley studied law at the University College of the Northern Territory obtaining a bachelor of laws with honours from the University of Queensland, worked at Philip and Mitaros, then became a police prosecutor, later lecturing in law part-time at the Northern Territory University.
