Yorke Peninsula
The Yorke Peninsula is a peninsula located northwest and west of Adelaide in South Australia, between Spencer Gulf on the west and Gulf St Vincent on the east. The peninsula is separated from Kangaroo Island to the south by Investigator Strait. The most populous town in the region is Kadina. History Prior to European settlement of the area commencing around 1840, following the British colonisation of South Australia, Yorke Peninsula was the home to the Narungga people. This Aboriginal Australian nation are the traditional owners of the land, and comprised four clans sharing the peninsula, known as Guuranda: Kurnara in the north, Dilpa in the south, Wari in the west and Windarra in the east. Today the descendants of these people still live on Yorke Peninsula, supported by the Narungga Aboriginal Progress Association in Maitland, and in the community at Point Pearce. Henry Tossell
Henry George Tossell (c. 1854 – 24 March 1933) was an Australian politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly multi-member seat of Yorke Peninsula from 1915 to 1930 for the Liberal Union and Liberal Federation. His family migrated to South Australia when he was at a young age, when he spent most of his time in the Mount Barker region. He worked for the Jeanes Brothers firm as a road contractor and became its manager before starting his own contracting business; he subsequently became a farmer near Maitland. As a contractor for the local road board, he was once the highest individual wage payer in his district. Tossell was one of the original members of the Farmers and Producers Political Union. He was an officer and councillor of the District Council of Yorke Peninsula for 27 years. Sir Cecil Stephen Hincks (18 February 1894 – 1 January 1963), Australian politician, was a member of the South Australian House of Assembly who was Minister of Lands, Irrigation and Repatriation in Thomas Playford's government. Early life Cecil Hincks was born on 18 February 1894, in the township of Maitland, South Australia, the son of miller Henry Stephen Hincks and his wife Emily Frances Picton (''née'' Parkins). He was educated at Port Victoria Public School and the Collegiate School of St Peter, and followed his father into the flour milling trade after completion of his schooling, while training with the cadets and citizens' force. Daniel Davies (Australian Politician)
Daniel Merddyn Scott Davies (1 March 1872 – 1 October 1951) was an Australian politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Yorke Peninsula from 1933 to 1941 as an independent. Davies was a postal employee at Mount Gambier for seven years, before being transferred as assistant postmaster at Glenelg in 1899, and then again transferred as postmaster at Minlaton in 1908, where he remained for the rest of his life. He initially continued as postmaster, but later become an auctioneer and agent, working as an agent until his death. He was a long-serving Justice of the Peace, had been Assistant Returning Officer for Yorke Peninsula for 21 years prior to standing for parliament and was secretary, and later long-serving auditor, of the Minlaton Institute.
