Electoral District Of Yokine
Yokine was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia from 1996 to 2008. It was named for the northern Perth suburb of Yokine which fell within its borders. The last member for Yokine was Bob Kucera who held the seat for the Labor Party by a margin of 8.2%. The seat was replaced at the 2007 distribution, taking effect at the 2008 election by the new seats of Mount Lawley and Nollamara. History The seat was created at the 1994 redistribution, replacing the seat of Dianella and taking in parts of Balcatta. It was first contested at the 1996 election by Dianella Liberal MLA Kim Hames, Balcatta Labor MLA Nick Catania and Upper House Labor MLC Sam Piantadosi. The seat was won by Hames, who served in the Outer Cabinet during Court's second term in office. Yokine, Western Australia
Yokine is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. History The name Yokine was derived from a Nyungar language word meaning " dingo" (which early settlers referred to as the "native dog"). The name was chosen because the area is close to Dog Swamp. Its post code is 6060. Yokine was part of the grant originally allocated to T. R. C. Walters in 1840. Western Australian Golf Limited owned Yokine from at least 1927 and subdivided a small portion of land near the golf course. Before World War II the only house in Yokine was at the eastern end of Royal Street. Yokine experienced a housing boom after the war and much of the area near the golf course was developed by the early 1950s. The southern area grew rapidly in the 1960s and by the late 1970s Yokine was almost completely developed. Sam Piantadosi
Samuel Mathew Piantadosi (April 1946 – 4 March 2010) was an Australian union official and politician. A senior Western Australian union official and the founding chairman of the Ethnic Communities Council in the 1980s, he was elected as a Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Council at the 1983 state election. His election made him the first post-war Italian migrant to be elected to the Parliament of Western Australia. He was re-elected in 1989, but resigned from the Labor Party in 1996, late in his second term, after reading newspaper reports that party figures were suggesting he would retire. He subsequently resigned from the Legislative Council several months short of the conclusion of his term in an unsuccessful attempt to contest the Legislative Assembly seat of Yokine as an independent at the 1996 state election. Dianella is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. It is within the local government area of the City of Stirling. Dianella was named after the botanical title of a small blue lily, '' Dianella revoluta'', a narrow-leafed plant that was plentiful in the area prior to residential development. History Early development of the area was slow, as the sandy soil, part of the Banksia sandplain, was considered unsuitable for agriculture. Nollamara is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. The name "Nollamara" is a Noongar word for the flowering plant '' Macropidia'', commonly known as the black kangaroo paw. The suburb is less than away from the Perth central business district and is approximately from Trigg beach. Westminster is a suburb approximately 12 kilometres north of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. Westminster was formerly the southern part of Balga but was renamed in 1995 at the request of residents. This was the name of the original estate that existed before residential subdivision.
