Toodyay was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1890 to 1977. The district was based on the town of Toodyay lying to the north-east of Perth. It was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 election. The district was abolished at the 1977 election. Toodyay, Western Australia
Toodyay (, nys, Duidgee), known as Newcastle between 1860 and 1910, is a town on the Avon River in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, north-east of Perth. The first European settlement occurred in the area in 1836. After flooding in the 1850s, the townsite was moved to its current location in the 1860s. It is connected by railway and road to Perth. During the 1860s, it was home to bushranger Moondyne Joe. History Origin of the name 'Toodyay' The meaning of the name is uncertain, although it is probably indigenous Noongar in origin. Timothy Quinlan
Timothy Francis Quinlan KSS (18 February 1861 – 8 July 1927) was an Irish-born Australian politician who represented the electorates of West Perth and Toodyay in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly between 1890 and 1894, and 1897 and 1911, respectively. Quinlan was also Speaker of the Assembly for a period of time between 1905 and 1911. Born in Borrisokane, County Tipperary, Ireland on 18 February 1861, Timothy Quinlan emigrated to Western Australia with his parents in 1863. Orphaned in 1865, he was raised by Joseph Thomas Reilly, and educated at the Cathedral Boys School in Perth. He worked for John Monger at York from 1875, and then for Alexander McRae at Roebourne. He was also involved in the pearling industry for about two years. In 1882, Quinlan leased the Shamrock Hotel in Perth from Daniel Connor, an expiree convict who had become one of the wealthiest men in the colony. James Craig (Australian Politician)
James Frederick Craig (22 December 1911 – 12 January 1989) was an Australian farmer and politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1959 to 1971, representing the seat of Toodyay. He served as a minister in the government of Sir David Brand. Craig was born in Kalgoorlie to Hilda Dagma (née Thornton) and James Burnett Craig. He attended Scotch College, Perth, and then found work as a clerk with Western Australian Government Railways, working at Welshpool. Craig enlisted in the Australian Army in 1939, and saw active duty in the Middle Eastern theatre. He initially returned to the railways after being discharged in 1942, and then from 1947 served as secretary and accountant for a cooperative based in the Swan Valley. Lindsay Thorn (7 June 1891 – 13 July 1971) was an Australian politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1930 to 1959, representing the seat of Toodyay. He was a minister in the government of Sir Ross McLarty. Early life Thorn was born in York, Western Australia, to Isabella (née Blakiston) and Thomas Henry Thorn. His parents moved to Fremantle when he was a child, where he attended the Fremantle Boys' School. The Western Australian Liberal Party was a political party which existed from 1911 until 1917 in the Australian state of Western Australia. Background The Party, which had its roots in various earlier political movements, came together in the period immediately prior to the 1911 state election under the guidance of Sir John Forrest, the Federal member for Swan and former Premier of Western Australia, and other leading political figures in the State. Alfred Piesse
Alfred Napoleon Piesse (17 July 1866 – 15 June 1939) was an Australian politician who served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1911 to 1924, representing the seat of Toodyay. He joined the Country Party upon its formation in 1914, and served as state deputy leader from 1915 to 1921, initially under Francis Willmott and then under Tom Harrison. Barnard Drummond Clarkson
Barnard Drummond Clarkson, born near York, Western Australia in 1836, was a pastoralist, explorer and politician. The Perth suburb of Clarkson was named after him. Family Clarkson's father Michael Clarkson arrived in the Swan River Colony in 1830 and married Jane Drummond, eldest daughter of James Drummond, on 7 November 1833. They had five sons, including Barnard, and two daughters. In 1867 Barnard Clarkson married Isabella Lukin, daughter of Lionel Lukin; they three sons and three daughters. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly is elected from 59 single-member electoral districts. These districts are often referred to as ''electorates'' or ''seats''.
