The Electoral district of Ringarooma was a single-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It centred on the town of Ringarooma in north-eastern Tasmania. Tasmanian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Voting for the House of Assembly is by a form of proportional representation using the single transferable vote (STV), known as the Hare-Clark electoral system. By having multiple members for each division, the voting intentions of the electors are more closely represented in the House of Assembly. Since 1998, the quota for election in each division, after distribution of preferences, has been 16.7% (one-sixth). Ringarooma, Tasmania
Ringarooma is a small town in north-eastern Tasmania. It is located just east of the Ringarooma River and is about south-west from Derby and east-northeast from Launceston. The area around Ringarooma is known for Dairy farming and timber harvesting. The locality is in the Dorset Council LGA, except for about 2.5% which is in the Break O'Day Council area. History The district was opened up to farming in the 1860s, and the town itself was founded in 1882 when a rural property was subdivided into lots by landowner Christopher Krushka. It was initially known as Krushka Town before being renamed Ringarooma in November 1888, taking on the name of a coastal town near Bridport, which was renamed Boobyalla. Ringarooma is believed to be an Aboriginal word meaning happy hunting ground. Ringarooma Post Office opened on 1 October 1874. In 2017 it was named the Legendary Capital of Tasmania. The Electoral district of Selby was a single-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It centred on the town of Lilydale in Tasmania's northeastern region, and extended into what are today considered Launceston's outer eastern suburbs. The seat was created ahead of the Assembly's first election held in 1856. The east and northeast of the electorate became part of the new seat of Ringarooma at the 1886 election. The seat was abolished at the 1903 election, when it merged with the neighbouring seat of Evandale to form the new seat of North Esk. William McWilliams
William James McWilliams (12 October 1856 – 22 October 1929) was an Australian politician who served as the inaugural leader of the Country Party, in office from 1920 to 1921. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1903 to 1922 and from 1928 to his death, on both occasions representing the Division of Franklin in Tasmania. He represented five different political parties during his time in parliament, eventually seeing out his final term as an independent. Early life Born in Bream Creek, near Sorell, Tasmania, the son of Irish immigrants who ran the local school. Originally trained as a teacher, McWilliams became a journalist in 1877, rising to editor of the ''Launceston Telegraph'' in 1883. Marrying Josephine Fullerton in Melbourne on 19 October 1893, McWilliams's role as editor helped his stature in the local community enough to ensure his election to the Tasmanian House of Assembly for the electorate of Ringarooma in the 1893 election. Carmichael Lyne
Carmichael Lyne (30 July 1861 – 28 November 1929) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1900 to 1906, representing the seat of Ringarooma. Lyne was born at his family's property near Swansea, Tasmania, the son of pastoralist John Lyne and brother of future Premier of New South Wales William Lyne. He was educated at Horton College before becoming a pastoralist like his father, initially managing his father's Glamorgan property. He was a councillor of the Municipality of Glamorgan, chairman of both the Police Court and Court of Petty Sessions at Glamorgan, warden and chairman of the Glamorgan Road Trust (in 1892–93) and a member of the executive committee of the Tasmanian Pastoral and Agricultural Association. In 1898, Lyne moved from Glamorgan to the Trevallyn Estate near Launceston. He was elected to the House of Assembly at the 1900 election in the seat of Ringarooma. Christopher O'Reilly (Tasmanian Politician)
Hon. Christopher O'Reilly, K.S.G., (1835 – 11 January 1910) was a politician in colonial Tasmania. O'Reilly was member for Kingborough in the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 28 September 1871 to December 1882. He was later member for Ringarooma in the Assembly from 29 March 1906 to 30 April 1909. O'Reilly was Minister of Lands and Works in Tasmania from August 1876 to August 1877, in the Reibey Ministry, and was sworn of the Executive Council on the former date. O'Reilly held the same portfolio in the Crowther and Giblin Ministries from Dec. 1878 to Dec. 1882, when he resigned and accepted the appointment of Stipendiary Magistrate at Scottsdale.
