Electoral District Of Numurkah And Nathalia
The Electoral district of Numurkah and Nathalia was an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was created by the Electoral Act Amendment Act 1888, taking effect at the 1889 elections. It was abolished by the Victorian Electoral Districts Boundaries Act 1903 (taking effect at the 1904 elections) when several new districts were created. Members of Numurkah and Nathalia :Graham went on to represent the newly created Goulburn Valley from June 1904. Numurkah
Numurkah ( ) is a town in Victoria, Australia, located on the Goulburn Valley Highway, north of Shepparton, in the Shire of Moira. At the , Numurkah had a population of 4,768. History The area was occupied by the Yorta Yorta people prior to European settlement. Squatters moved into the area from NSW in the late 1830s. After the pastoral runs were made available for farm selection, the township of Numurkah was surveyed in 1875, the Post Office opening 2 November 1878. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1881, but has not seen any passenger services since 1993 when the train to Cobram was withdrawn. The station building remains in private ownership, and a footbridge crosses the line. Numurkah became the headquarters of the Murray Valley Soldier Settlement Area - one of the largest soldier settlements in Australia - after World War I. Nathalia, Victoria
Nathalia ( ) is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located within the Shire of Moira local government area on the banks of Broken Creek and on the Murray Valley Highway. At the 2021 census, Nathalia had a population of 1,982. History Prior to European settlement, the area around Nathalia was occupied by the Yorta Yorta people. In 1838, Charles Sturt was the first European to explore the area, following the Murray River downstream. The squatter, W.J Locke established Kotupna station on the future site of Nathalia in 1843. The station was broken up for closer settlement in 1869. A selector, Richard Blake took up the townsite in 1875 and established a sawmill and flour mill soon after. Hotels, a post office (opened on 7 September 1878), schools and churches followed and Nathalia was officially gazetted as a village in 1880. George Graham (Victorian Politician)
George Graham (16 August 1838 – 22 July 1922), was a farmer and politician in colonial Victoria, Australia, as Minister of Water Supply 1890–1893. Biography Graham was born in Linlithgow, West Lothian, Scotland, the son of George Graham, farmer, and his wife Ellen, ''née'' Hardy. Graham was returned to the district of Moira in the Victorian Legislative Assembly in June 1884. Graham held this seat until its abolition in March 1889. He was then elected for the new Numurkah and Nathalia district in April 1889, which he held until May 1904 when it was abolished. In November 1890 he accepted office in James Munro's Government as Minister of Water Supply (5 November 1890 – 23 January 1893), and was sworn of the Executive Council. Graham then represented Goulburn Valley from June 1904 to November 1914.
