Electoral District Of North Coolgardie
North Coolgardie was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1897 to 1901. The district was located in the Western Australian outback. In 1898, it included the settlements of Menzies and Goongarrie along the Menzies–Kalgoorlie railway line, as well as the more remote settlements of Mount Ida, Mount Leonora, Mulline, Niagara, and Yerilla, and the Mount Margaret goldfields. It existed for one term of parliament, and was represented in that time by Henry Gregory. North Coolgardie Road District
The North Coolgardie Road District was an early form of local government area on the Western Australian goldfields. It was based in the town of Menzies, although that township was outside the board's boundaries, having been incorporated as the Municipality of Menzies in 1895. It was established on 5 August 1898. Yerilla, Western Australia
Yerilla is an abandoned town located in the Goldfields-Esperance region in Western Australia. It is found between Kalgoorlie and Laverton. Gold was discovered in the area in January 1895 when the Mount Catherine reef was discovered. The reef is located about south of the town and was particularly rich in alluvial gold. Another outcrop, the ''Queen of the Earth'' was discovered by the prospectors MacGregor, McAuliffe and party further from town. This sparked a gold rush to the field and by 1896 the local miners had joined together and formed a progress association and requested that a townsite be declared. The town was gazetted in November 1896. A police station situated in McKinery Street commenced operations in July 1897 with Constable L. McDonald initially manning the station. Menzies was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1901 to 1930. The district was located in the north of the Eastern Goldfields. On its creation in 1900, it included the towns of Menzies, Goongarrie, Niagara, Yerilla, Tampa, Mount Ida, Mulline, and Callion. 1901 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 24 April 1901 to elect 50 members to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly. It was the first election to take place since responsible government without the towering presence of Premier Sir John Forrest, who had left state politics two months earlier to enter the first Federal parliament representing the Division of Swan, and the first state parliamentary election to follow the enactment of women's suffrage in 1899. The Ministerial group, led by Forrest's nominated successor George Throssell, ran a half-hearted campaign for government, with Throssell saying in a policy speech that while he would continue to serve as Premier if required, "it was not the class of political life he desired, as it interfered too much with his leisure." Henry Gregory (politician)
Henry Gregory (15 March 1860 – 15 November 1940) was an Australian politician. He was a Ministerialist member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1897 to 1911, representing the electorates of North Coolgardie (1897-1901) and Menzies (1901-1911). He was state Minister for Mines from 1901 to 1904 under George Leake and Walter James and Minister for Mines and Railways from 1905 to 1911 under Hector Rason, Newton Moore and Frank Wilson. He rose to become Treasurer from 1910 to 1911, a role that also entailed him acting as Premier if Wilson was absent, but lost his seat at the 1911 state election. He subsequently entered federal politics as a member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1913 until his death in 1940, representing the electorates of Dampier (1911-1922) and Swan (1922-1940). Mount Margaret, Western Australia
Mount Margaret was an abandoned town located northeast of Perth and southwest of Laverton in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. The first European to visit the area was government surveyor John Forrest who passed through in 1869 while on an expedition in search of the lost explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. On 25 June he named a nearby hill Mount Margaret after Margaret Elvire Hamersley whom he later married in 1876. The local indigenous name for the hill is ''Kalgara''. Gold was discovered at the site of the future town in 1893 by prospectors James Ross and Bob McKenzie. The town's main mine was the Mt Morven (formerly the Mt Margaret Reward), situated on the eastern side of the townsite. By 1896 the local progress association began campaigning for the townsite to be declared. By 1897 lots had been surveyed and the townsite was gazetted in the same year.
