New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Newtown is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It includes the inner Sydney suburbs of Redfern, Chippendale, Darlington, Eveleigh, Newtown, Enmore, Stanmore and Petersham and parts of Surry Hills, Waterloo, Erskineville, Camperdown, Marrickville and Lewisham. It elected one member from 1859 to 1880, two members from 1880 to 1885, three members from 1885 to 1891 and four members from 1891 to 1894. St Peters is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is 7 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Inner West Council, with a small section in the southeast in the City of Sydney. History St Peters was named by its association with St Peters Anglican Church, which was consecrated in 1838. St Peters is the third oldest Anglican church in Sydney and has been claimed to be the first church built in Australia using non-convict labour. The church is on the Princes Highway. It was designed by Thomas Bird and built in 1838–39. In 1875, alterations were carried out under the supervision of Edmund Blacket. The church is now listed on the Register of the National Estate. William Rigg (politician)
William Rigg (1 January 1847 – 3 November 1926) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in Liverpool to joiner George Rigg and Sarah Barclay. The family moved to New South Wales around 1852, and Rigg attended Christ Church School until the age of fifteen, when he began working in the office of the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company. He eventually rose to become chairman of the Board of Directors of the company, and also founded the Clyde Engineering Company. He was six times Mayor of Newtown and served as an alderman for twenty-three years. On 17 September 1873 he married Elizabeth Gregg, with whom he had six children; he later married Harriett Westbrook in England around 1884 and had a daughter. In 1894 Rigg was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Newtown-St Peters; he was generally considered a Free Trader. He held the seat until his defeat in 1901. James Fallick
James Fallick (2 May 1853 – 1 May 1926) was an Australian politician. He was born at Colemans Shalfleet on the Isle of Wight to labourer Philip Fallick and Edith Cooper. He was educated in England and worked as a bricklayer on the Isle of Wight until 1874, when he emigrated to the New Zealand goldfields. In 1876 he moved to New South Wales, becoming a builder in St Peters in 1881. He married Elizabeth Wild in November 1877; they had five children. He was a St Peters alderman from 1886 to 1893, serving as mayor for a single term in 1888–1889. He was in England from 1893 to 1896, and on his return was an Orangeman and a free trader. In 1901 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Independent Liberal member for Newtown-St Peters, moving to Singleton as an official Liberal in 1904.
