Marmion was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1989 to 1996. The district was based in Perth's beachside northern suburbs. Politically, it was a safe Liberal seat. History Marmion was first created for the 1989 state election. It was won by Liberal candidate Jim Clarko, who was until then the member for Karrinyup, which had been abolished. Marmion, Western Australia
Marmion is a northern coastal suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Joondalup. History Marmion was named after Patrick Marmion, master whaler, who operated a whaling station in the area in 1849. There are still some remains of the old whaling station in the adjacent suburb, Sorrento. A monument to Marmion can be found in Geneff Park in Padbury Circle, Sorrento. Prior to white settlement, the Whadjuk Aboriginal people, who called the area Mooro, gathered abalone and other shellfish in large numbers off the nearby reefs. The area was popular with fishermen in the 1930s, and numerous boatsheds and shacks were built there, as well as a whaling station. A townsite was gazetted in the area in 1940, but it remained largely undeveloped until the late 1950s, when the postal district of Marmion was approved. The ''Electoral Distribution Act 1947'' requires regular review of electoral boundaries, in order to keep the relative size of electorates within certain limits. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. The Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), branded as Liberal Western Australia, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Western Australia. 1989 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 4 February 1989 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Labor government, led by Premier Peter Dowding, won a third term in office against the Liberal Party, led by Opposition Leader Barry MacKinnon. The result was a major swing against the Labor Party, coming in the wake of revelations of dealings between Government and business that came to be known as WA Inc. The redistribution that took place in 1988, based upon the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'' which abolished several country and outer metropolitan electorates while creating new metropolitan ones, makes it difficult to assess how Labor would have performed on the old boundaries—while it lost four seats, it gained one Liberal-held seat and won several of the new seats, so in net terms, it only lost one seat despite the massive swing and the low two-party-preferred result. James George Clarko (21 July 1932 – 7 April 2020) was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1996, representing the electorates of Karrinyup (1974–1989) and Marmion (1989–1996). 1996 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 14 December 1996 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Liberal–National coalition government, led by Premier Richard Court, won a second term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Dr Geoff Gallop since 15 October 1996.
