Electoral District Of Longford
The Electoral district of Longford was a single-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It centred on the town of Longford near Tasmania's second city, Launceston. The seat was created in a redistribution ahead of the 1886 election, largely replacing the seat of Norfolk Plains, and was abolished when the Tasmanian parliament adopted the Hare-Clark electoral model in 1909. The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Longford is a town in the northern midlands of Tasmania, Australia. It lies 145 m above sea level at the convergence of the Macquarie River and the South Esk River, 21 km south of Launceston and a 15-minute drive from the airport. The Electoral district of Norfolk Plains was a single-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It was based near the town of Longford to the south of Launceston, Tasmania's second city, and also included the towns of Carrick and Perth. Henry Dumaresq
Henry Rowland Gascoigne Dumaresq (20 February 1839 – 31 October 1924) was an Australian politician who represented the electoral district of Longford in the Tasmanian House of Assembly between 1886 and 1903. He was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly on 26 July 1886 and resigned on 12 May 1903. He was the son of Edward Dumaresq (1802–1906), who had migrated to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania), in 1825, around the time that his brother-in-law Ralph Darling became Governor of New South Wales. He was the nephew of Henry Dumaresq (1792–1838) and William Dumaresq (1793–1868). It is likely that he was named after his uncle, who had died in the year before Dumaresq was born. Dumaresq also played one first-class cricket match for Tasmania in 1868, almost twenty years before he entered parliament. Alfred Youl
Alfred Youl (23 August 1849 – 3 February 1921) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly for Longford from 1903 to 1909 and a member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council for Macquarie from 1909 to 1920. Youl was born into a prominent Tasmanian family at the family home, Symmons Plains Estate, near Perth. His family moved to Surrey in England in 1854, and he was educated at St Aubin's School in Jersey and Uppingham School in Leicestershire. He married Margaret Mansell in 1875, after which they returned to Tasmania and acquired the notable Leighlands property, near Perth.
