Electoral District Of Leichhardt (New South Wales)
Leichhardt was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, created in 1894, with the abolition of multi-member electorates and partly replacing Balmain, and named after and including the Sydney suburb of Leichhardt. With the introduction of proportional representation Proportional representation (PR) refers to a type of electoral system under which subgroups of an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is elected from single-member electorates called districts, returning 93 members since the 1999 election. Prior to 1927 some districts returned multiple members, including 1920-1927 when all districts returned 3,4 or 5 members. Parramatta is the only district to have continuously existed since the establishment of the Assembly in 1856. Barney Olde
Bernard Clarence "Barney" Olde (1 January 1882 – 20 November 1932) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1927 to 1932, representing the electorate of Leichhardt. Olde was born at Vittoria, near Bathurst, but was raised in Petersham in suburban Sydney, and educated at the Christian Brothers' school at Lewisham. A clerk by profession, he worked alternately in the Railways refreshment rooms, as an estate agent, and in the office of the '' Labor Daily'' newspaper. He was a foundation member of the Clerks' Union, and served as the secretary and president of the Petersham League. Olde was elected to parliament on his fourth attempt when, in 1927, he won the newly recreated safe Labor seat of Leichhardt. He had previously contested a 1919 by-election for Petersham, and the 1920 and 1925 elections for Western Suburbs. He was re-elected in 1930 and 1932, but died in office later in 1932. Reg Coady
Reginald John Francis Coady (28 May 1918 – 13 May 1977) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1954 until 1973. He was a member of the Labor Party (ALP). Coady was born in Forest Lodge and was the son of a carter. He was educated at Patrician Brothers High School, Forest Lodge and qualified as a book-keeper, eventually becoming the chief clerk for Tooheys Brewery. He was an official on the Federated Clerks' Union and became involved in community organisations in the Glebe area including the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and the Australian Red Cross. Coady was elected to the parliament as the Labor member for Leichhardt at the 1954 by-election caused by the suicide of the incumbent Labor member and ex-minister Claude Matthews. Claude Hilton Matthews (19 January 1899 – 9 January 1954) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1934 until his death in 1954 . He was variously a member of the Labor Party (ALP) and the Australian Labor Party (NSW). He held a number of ministerial positions including Chief Secretary Early and personal life Matthews was born in Rylstone, New South Wales He was the son of a foreman and was educated at Petersham High School. He worked with the New South Wales Government Railways as a labourer and became an official of the Federated Ironworkers' Association. Joe Lamaro
Joseph Lamaro (27 July 1895 – 22 May 1951) was an Australian politician. Born in Redfern to shopkeeper Deico Lamaro and Maria Giuseppa Taranto, Italian migrants, he attended St Joseph's School in Newtown and St Patrick's College in Goulburn before studying at the University of Sydney, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in 1915 and a Bachelor of Law in 1922. He served in the Australian Imperial Force's 18th Battalion from 1916 to 1917 in the signals unit, seeing action at Ypres and the Somme. He was called to the Bar in 1922 and a member of the first Australian Board of Control from 1924 to 1927. In 1927 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Enmore, shifting to Petersham in 1930 and Leichhardt in 1932. Lamaro served as Minister of Justice from 1930 to 1931 and Attorney-General from 1931 to 1932.
