Electoral District Of King (New South Wales)
King was an electoral district in the Australian state of New South Wales. It was created in 1904 as a result of the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. It largely replaced Sydney-King, losing a part to Darling Harbour. It was expanded to include parts of Sydney-Fitzroy and Sydney-Bligh. It also included Lord Howe Island, Montague Island and South Solitary Island. In 1920 NSW introduced proportional representation and the district was absorbed into the multi-member electorate of Sydney. NSW returned to single member electorates in 1927 and King was recreated. The Parliament of New South Wales is a bicameral legislature in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), consisting of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly (lower house) and the New South Wales Legislative Council (upper house). Albert Sloss
Albert Ross Sloss (15 February 1911 – 26 April 1990) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1956 to 1973, representing the seat of King. Sloss was born in Sydney to William Sloss, a Scottish migrant, and his wife Catherine O'Neill. He was educated at St Joseph's Sisters of Mercy School and Plunkett Street Public School before being employed by Sydney City Council from 1925 to 1939. In 1927 he joined the Labor Party, and was active in the Municipal and Shires' Employees Union from 1925. On 23 December 1931 he married Catherine Moffat, with whom he had two daughters. In 1939, Sloss was elected to Sydney City Council for Phillip Ward; he would serve until 1941, and again for Macquarie Ward from 1950 to 1953. Sloss was also involved in the various Labor splits of the 1930s and 1940s, being a member of the State Labor Party. Daniel Clyne
Daniel Clyne (28 December 1879 – 28 August 1965) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1927 until 1956 and, variously, a member of the Labor Party (ALP) and Lang Labor. He was the Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1941 and 1947. Clyne was born in Bathurst. He was the son of a farmer, was educated to elementary level at convent schools and from age 14 worked as a fettler for the New South Wales Government Railways. As an official in the Australian Railways Union he was dismissed for taking part in the 1917 general strike. He subsequently advanced in the Labor movement as an official of the Storemen and Packers' Union. At the 1927 state election, Clyne was elected to the New South Wales Parliament as the Labor member for the new seat of King. Thomas Januarius Smith (13 January 1890 – 23 September 1975) was an Irish-born Australian politician. He was born in Dublin; his father was James William Smith. He was educated at St Francis Xavier's College, Liverpool, before becoming a clothing salesman. On arrival in New South Wales he became involved with the trade union movement, working as an organiser for the Australian Workers' Union. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1917 as the Labor member for King, but with the introduction of proportional representation in 1920 he was defeated running for the multi-member seat of Sydney.
