Gympie is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland The electorate is centred on the city of Gympie and stretches north to Rainbow Beach and as far south to Pomona. The seat is currently held by Tony Perrett of the Liberal National Party. The district's most famous former member is Andrew Fisher, who later became Prime Minister of Australia. Robert Stuart Lord (1844 – 23 July 1878) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Lord was born in 1844 in (Sydney, New South Wales, Australia). His parents were Simeon Lord Jnr (1810-1892) and Sarah (née Birch). Lord's family had connections to Australia dating back to his grandfather Simeon Lord (c. 28 January 1771 – 29 January 1840), a transported convict. Allen Maxwell Hodges (11 February 191731 July 2009) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Hodges was born in Brisbane, Queensland, the son of Arthur John Hodges and his wife Helen Allen (née Mitchell). His great grandfather, William Mitchell, had represented the seat of Maryborough in the Queensland Legislative Assembly in 1904–1909. He was educated in Maryborough and on leaving school he did farm-related work. Country And Progressive National Party
The Country and Progressive National Party was a short-lived conservative political party in the Australian state of Queensland. Formed in 1925, it combined the state's conservative forces in a single party and held office between 1929 and 1932 under the leadership of Arthur Edward Moore. Following repeated election defeat it split into separate rural and urban wings in 1936. History It was created in 1925 as the result of a merger between the state's two conservative parties, the United Party (the Queensland branch of the Nationalist Party) and the Country Party, in an attempt to end a decade of Labor domination in the state. Vivian Hoyles Tozer (1870–1954) was a solicitor and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Vivian Hoyles Tozer was born on 27 May 1870 in Gympie, the son of Horace Tozer (a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Wide Bay) and his wife Mary Hoyles (née Wilson). He was involved in the Wide Bay Light Horse Regiment and was a keen rifleman. Politics A member of the Country and Progressive National Party, Tozer represented Gympie in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 11 May 1929 to 11 May 1935. Later life Tozer donated the land on which Gympie State High School stands. Tozer died on 5 September 1954 in Gympie, survived by his wife and son. Thomas Dunstan (20 April 1873 – 19 June 1954) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Dunstan was born at Thames, New Zealand, the son of Nicholas John Dunstan and his wife Esther Mary Ann (née Connon). His brothers were George and William Dunstan. He was educated at Thames State School and the One Mile State School in Gympie. On leaving School he was an apprentice with ''The Gympie Times'' newspaper before joining the ''Gympie Truth'' as a reporter, secretary, and canvasser. In 1901, he was promoted to editor-manager of the Truth and held this position for the next 41 years and in 1943 was the editor of the ''Labor Leader''. George Mackay (Australian Politician)
George Hugh Alexander Mackay (20 March 18725 November 1961) was an Australian politician at state and federal level. He served in the Queensland Legislative Assembly as a Liberal from 1912 to 1915, before winning the Division of Lilley as a Nationalist at the 1917 federal election. Mackay joined the new United Australia Party (UAP) in 1931 and served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1932 until his retirement in 1934. Early life Mackay was born at Copperfield, near Clermont in Queensland, to Scottish-born carpenter Hugh Mackay and Jane, née Baird. He attended the state schools at Clermont and Bundaberg before becoming an apprentice printer at the ''Peak Downs Telegram'' in 1887. Daniel Mulcahy (1857 – 6 January 1932) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Mulcahy was born at Tamworth, New South Wales, the son of John Mulcahy and his wife Ellen (née Allen). He was educated in Tamworth and he became a miner and investor in Gympie from 1880. After his defeat in politics, Mulcahy worked as a land agent in Gympie. On 8 September 1885, he married Bridget Mary Ryan. She died the following year. He then married Mary Frances Synan, a school teacher, in 1892. They had three daughters and one son together. George Ryland (Queensland Politician)
George Ryland (1855 - 19 October 1920) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Ryland was born at Attyconner, Westmeath, Ireland, the son of George Ryland Snr. and his wife Rachel (née Lee). He arrived in Queensland in 1866 and from 1875 until 1886 was a sugar and railway worker in Maryborough. In 1875 Ryland was working as a miner in Gympie and from 1890 was an organiser with the Amalgamated Miners' Association. After his time in the Queensland Parliament he was based in Port Darwin, as the Director of Lands for two years and then he worked in Brisbane as a valuator with the Public Curator's Office in 1915. On 23 August 1880 he married Maria Ann Newburn and together had two sons and a daughter. Jacob Stumm (26 August 1853 – 23 January 1921) was an Australian politician. He was a Ministerialist member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for the seat of Gympie from 1896 to 1899 and a Commonwealth Liberal Party member of the Australian House of Representatives for Lilley from 1913 to 1917. Early life and career Stumm was born in Germany, but was brought to his Australia by his parents at the age of 2 and raised in Toowoomba, Queensland, where he was educated at public schools. He moved to Gympie at the age of 15 and lived there for the rest of his life, with the exception of a few years at Maryborough. He worked as a ''Hansard'' reporter and worked as a journalist for ''The Gympie Times'' before purchasing the newspaper in partnership with A. G. Ramsey in 1880.
