Electoral District Of Gascoyne
Gascoyne was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1890 to 1989. The district was located in the Western Australian outback, in the north-west of the state. It was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 election. In 1898, its major settlement was Carnarvon and it also included some outlying pastoral leases like Middalya Station. The seat was abolished ahead of the 1989 election. Gascoyne (Western Australia)
The Gascoyne region is one of the nine administrative regions of Western Australia. It is located in the northwest of Western Australia, and consists of the local government areas of Carnarvon, Exmouth, Shark Bay and Upper Gascoyne. Archibald Gilchrist
Archibald Gilchrist (1878 – 10 March 1955) was an Australian businessman and politician. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1914 to 1917, representing the seat of Gascoyne. Early life Gilchrist was born in Melbourne to Hadassah (née Kendall) and Archibald Gilchrist, his father being a Presbyterian minister. He was raised in Sydney, and attended Sydney High School before finding work on the staff of the Public Library of New South Wales. Gilchrist moved to Carnarvon, Western Australia, in 1904, where he was the pastor of a Presbyterian church for a period (although without becoming ordained). Dudley Maslen
Dudley John Maslen (born 2 April 1948) is an Australian politician. He was born at Carnarvon to pastoralist John Andrew Maslen and Joan Carmel Stroud. He was educated by correspondence before attending St Patrick's College in Geraldton and Guildford Grammar School. He became a pastoralist. On 2 March 1973 he married Christine Jennifer Samson; they had four children. He served on Carnarvon Shire Council from 1975 to 1988. A Liberal Party member, he was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly in 1987 as the member for Gascoyne. In 1989 he ran unsuccessfully for Northern Rivers. After his defeat he joined the National Party, and contested the Western Australian Legislative Council in 1996 and 2001 and the Senate in 1998. Ian James Laurance (born 30 April 1940) is a former Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1974 to 1987, representing the seat of Gascoyne. He was a minister in the governments of Sir Charles Court and Ray O'Connor, and briefly served as deputy leader of the Liberal Party (from 1986 to 1987). Early life Laurance was born in Northam, in the Wheatbelt, but was educated in Perth, attending Perth Boys' School and John Curtin Senior High School. He went on to study at Graylands Teachers College and the University of Western Australia, subsequently working as a country schoolteacher. Laurance married Barbara Anne Berry (the daughter of George Berry) in 1964, with whom he had two children. Daniel Norton (12 July 1905 – 10 January 1992) was an Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1953 to 1974, representing the seat of Gascoyne. He served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 1971 to 1974. Early life Norton was born in Wadhurst, Sussex, England. His family migrated to Victoria in 1913, where he attended the state school at Tresco before going on to Ballarat Grammar School. After leaving school, Norton was employed by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, working variously as a wheat lumper, truck driver, and mechanic. He came to Western Australia in 1928, living in Perth for a period before moving out to the Gascoyne, where he initially ran a service station at Wubin. Norton moved to Carnarvon in 1934, where he ran a general store, and from 1938 worked as a salesman for the International Harvester Company. The Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), branded as Liberal Western Australia, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Western Australia. Noel Albert Butcher (19 November 1894 – 23 January 1968) was an Australian businessman and politician who served as an independent member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1951 to 1953, representing the seat of Gascoyne. Butcher was born in Mardella (on the outskirts of Perth) to Rachael (née White) and Hugh John Butcher. He left school at the age of 14, and began working at the Midland Railway Workshops as an apprentice fitter and turner. In the 1920s, Butcher worked variously as a bank teller, engineer, and sheep farmer (at Bindi Bindi). He eventually trained as a mining engineer, and worked for periods at Mount Morgans, Yellowdine, and Marble Bar (as mine manager and a company director).
