Tasmanian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Voting for the House of Assembly is by a form of proportional representation using the single transferable vote (STV), known as the Hare-Clark electoral system. By having multiple members for each division, the voting intentions of the electors are more closely represented in the House of Assembly. Since 1998, the quota for election in each division, after distribution of preferences, has been 16.7% (one-sixth). Jonathan Best
Jonathan Best (19 August 1840 – 13 May 1913) was an Australian politician. He was born in Launceston, Van Diemen's Land. In 1894 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as the member for Deloraine. He was defeated in 1897 but served again from 1899 to 1909, when proportional representation was introduced. He was elected as one of the members for Wilmot and served until his defeat in 1912; he was re-elected in 1913 but died in office at Launceston later that year. Norman Cameron (politician)
Donald Norman Cameron (3 November 1851 – 17 February 1931) was an Australian politician. He served in the House of Representatives (1901–1903, 1904–1906) and Tasmanian House of Assembly (1912–1913, 1925–1928). Early life Cameron was born in Launceston, Tasmania, the son of Donald Cameron who served in the Tasmanian Legislative Council from 1868 to 1886. Federal politics At the 1901 federal election, Cameron was elected for the Free Trade Party as one of Tasmania's five members of the Australian House of Representatives, since Tasmania had not been divided into electoral divisions. At the 1903 election he contested the seat of Denison, but was defeated by the Protectionist candidate, Sir Philip Fysh. He returned to the House when he won a by-election in the seat of Wilmot in 1904. He is remembered today for his part in the choice of national capital. Henry Rooke
Hon. Henry Isidore Joachim Raphael Rooke (1841 – 28 November 1901), was a colonial merchant and politician in the colony of Tasmania. Early life Rooke was born in Spain in 1841, the son of Colonel Benjamin Henry Rooke of the English Legion, who fought all through the Carlist war. His father also was in the Imperial service, and served in the Spanish army. His mother, Maria del Carmen Rooke, was of Spanish extraction. He was educated in London, and came to Tasmania with his parents when 16 years of age. After spending some years in the country he went to Launceston, and started business as merchant and importer, one of the principals of the firm of Rooke and Maddox. Political career Rooke entered the Tasmanian House of Assembly as the member for Deloraine on 25 May 1882, and in 1896 was returned for North Esk in the Tasmanian Legislative Council in July, 1886 which he held until his death having been re-elected each time without opposition. Samuel James "Sugar Jim" Henry (October 23, 1920 — January 21, 2004) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. A goaltender, Henry played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks and the Boston Bruins between 1941 and 1955. Early life Henry was born on October 23, 1920, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to mother Essie Henry. Growing up, he earned the nickname "Sugar" as the neighbours would dip his pacifier into sugar. During the 1930s, he played for the Brandon Elks in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and led them to the Turnbull Cup. Following this, Henry joined the Regina Rangers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League where he led them to the 1941 Allen Cup.
