Electoral District Of Cook
Cook is an electoral district in Queensland, Australia. Cook covers the vast Cape York Peninsula north of Cairns, including the resort town of Port Douglas and the Torres Strait Islands. It is named after British navigator James Cook, who charted the coast and landed on Possession Island – one of the Torres Strait islands – in 1770. History 1883 election In the 1883 election, there were four candidates for the (then) two-member electorate. They were: * Thomas Campbell * Frederick Cooper (one of the sitting members) * John Hamilton * Charles Lumley Hill (a former member in Gregory) Cooper and Hamilton were elected, but there were allegations of "ballot stuffing", specifically that there were too many votes cast at the California Gully and Halpin's Creek polling stations given the number of electors. Cynthia Lui
Cynthia Lillian Lui (born 17 February 1977) is an Australian politician. She has been the Australian Labor Party member for Cook in the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 2017. ''The Morning Bulletin'' is an online newspaper servicing the city of Rockhampton and the surrounding areas of Central Queensland, Australia. From 1861 to 2020, ''The Morning Bulletin'' was published as a print edition, before then becoming an exclusively online newspaper. The final print edition was published on 27 June 2020. History The first issue of ''The Bulletin'' was launched on 9 July 1861. It is the second oldest business in Rockhampton, the oldest being the Criterion Hotel which was established in October 1860. The founder and original owner, William Hitchcock Buzacott (1831–1880, brother of Charles Hardie Buzacott), brought the press and equipment from Sydney in 1861 where he operated a small weekly paper. ''The Northern Miner'' is an online newspaper published in Charters Towers, Queensland, Australia. History ''The Northern Miner'' was first established in 1872 by James Smith Reid. Reid established the paper only eight months after the discovery of gold in the regional Queensland town Charters Towers. In 1876 Reid sold the paper to Thadeus O'Kane. As the owner and editor of the Northern Miner, O’Kane devoted himself and the paper to improving the lives of the miners working in Charters Towers. Of the five newspapers published in the goldfields ''The Northern Miner'' was the only one to survive the downturn in gold mining. The paper is still being published today from the same Gill Street address it has been at since 1878. ''The Queenslander'' was the weekly summary and literary edition of the '' Brisbane Courier'', the leading journal in the colony—and later, federal state—of Queensland since the 1850s. Charles Lumley Hill
Charles Lumley Hill (1840 – 28 October 1909) was a pastoralist, businessman and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Hill was born in 1840 at Tickhill Castle, Yorkshire, England, the son of Colonel Charles John Hill and his wife Lady Frances Charlotte Arabella (née Lumley). Politics Hill was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the electoral district of Gregory on 14 November 1878 at the 1878 colonial election. He resigned from the seat on 20 February 1882, having delayed until a suitable successor ( Thomas McWhannell) was found. Thomas McWhannell won the resulting by-election on 21 March 1882.
