Cockburn is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is based in Perth's south-western suburbs. Politically, it is a safe Labor seat. Geography Cockburn is located in the south-western suburbs of Perth. It is a coastal electorate, lying to the west of the Kwinana Freeway. The district includes the suburbs of Cockburn Central, Atwell, Yangebup, Munster, Beeliar, Success, Henderson, Wattleup, Hammond Park, most of Coogee and Lake Coogee Lake Coogee is a saline lake in the suburb of Lake Coogee, south-west of the central business district of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. David Scaife
David Anthony Edward Scaife (born 16 December 1988) is an Australian politician, who was elected as a Labor member for Cockburn in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly at the 2021 state election. Early life and education David Scaife was born on 16 December 1988 in Subiaco, Western Australia to Roy Edward Walter Scaife, a public servant, and Catherine Mary Scaife (née Rowe). He went to Australind Primary School from 1993 to 2000, and Australind Senior High School from 2001 to 2005. He was one of 23 students in 2005 to achieve a perfect Tertiary Entrance Rank score of 99.95. He studied for a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) at the University of Western Australia from 2006 to 2012, and a Master of Laws at University College London in 2019 and 2020. Lake Coogee, Western Australia
Lake Coogee is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn, and named after Lake Coogee, located within the suburb. History In 2019, the City of Cockburn approved a split of the suburb of Munster, Western Australia, Munster, whereby the north-western part of the suburb became the new suburb of Lake Coogee, while another part, in the south-west, was added to the suburb of Henderson, Western Australia, Henderson. Only the eastern part of Munster remained part of the existing suburb. The changes came into effect on 30 March 2020. Prior to being part of the suburb of Munster from 1954, the district had been known as ''South Coogee'' since the 1870s and this earlier name remains in use by older settlers of the area. The district is one of the earliest parts of Western Australia to be settled by Europeans and the remains of the cottages built by the Pensioner Guards in the 1880s can still be seen around the Lake Coogee reserve. Fran Logan
Francis Michael Logan (born 25 February 1956) is a former politician in Western Australia, who was the Minister for Emergency Services and Corrective Services in the McGowan Labor Government from 2017 to 2021, . He was elected to the south western electorate of Cockburn for the Labor Party in 2001, and retired from the Legislative Assembly in 2021. 1989 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 4 February 1989 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Labor government, led by Premier Peter Dowding, won a third term in office against the Liberal Party, led by Opposition Leader Barry MacKinnon. The result was a major swing against the Labor Party, coming in the wake of revelations of dealings between Government and business that came to be known as WA Inc. The redistribution that took place in 1988, based upon the ''Acts Amendment (Electoral Reform) Act 1987'' which abolished several country and outer metropolitan electorates while creating new metropolitan ones, makes it difficult to assess how Labor would have performed on the old boundaries—while it lost four seats, it gained one Liberal-held seat and won several of the new seats, so in net terms, it only lost one seat despite the massive swing and the low two-party-preferred result. Norman Richard Marlborough (born 12 August 1945) is a former Australian politician. Biography Originally from England, Marlborough was born in Westow, Yorkshire, and arrived in Western Australia in 1963. Before he entered parliament, he was a fitter and turner and later a union official. He was elected as a Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly for the seat of Cockburn at a by-election on 7 June 1986, following the death of Clive Hughes. Clive Hughes (Western Australian Politician)
Clive Matthew Hughes (23 June 1947 – 4 April 1986) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1984 until his death, representing the seat of Cockburn. Hughes was born in Liverpool, England, to Agnes Veronica (née Carroll) and Francis Malachy Hughes. He and his parents emigrated to Australia when he was a small child. He attended various schools, including Christian Brothers College, Fremantle, before going on to the University of Western Australia, but did not complete his degree. Working for CSBP, a chemical and fertiliser supplier, Hughes became involved with the Federated Miscellaneous Workers' Union, serving as a shop steward and later as an organiser. Don Taylor (Australian Politician)
Alexander Donald Taylor AM (born 24 January 1928) is a former Australian politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1968 to 1984, representing the seat of Cockburn. He served as a minister in the government of John Tonkin, including as deputy premier from 1973 to 1974. Taylor later served as Administrator of Christmas Island (an Australian external territory) from 1986 to 1990. Early life Taylor was born in Kalgoorlie to Lily Irene (née Jennings) and Alexander Taylor.
