Carine is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district is based in Perth's northern suburbs. Politically, it has been a safe Liberal seat but Paul Lilburne won it for the Labor Party for the first time at the 2021 election. Geography Carine is a beachside electorate located in Perth's northern suburbs. It is bounded to the east by the Mitchell Freeway, to the south by North Beach Road, Karrinyup Road and Reid Highway and to the west by the Indian Ocean. Its northern boundary consists of Hepburn Avenue. Watermans Bay, Western Australia
Watermans Bay is a northern coastal suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. History The area originally formed part of the Hamersley Estate, which also included the suburbs now known as Carine, North Beach and modern-day Hamersley. These areas were owned by the Hamersley family, who arrived from Europe to settle in the Swan River Colony in 1837. The Hamersleys built a summer home just south of Waterman called "The Castle" in 1865, where their large family, as well as the Perth elite, congregated for summer holidays. Many of the street names in the suburb honour members of the Hamersley family, including Ethel, Margaret, Mary, Ada and Elsie. Katie Hodson-Thomas
Katina Hodson-Thomas (born 28 April 1957) is an Australian politician who was a Liberal member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly representing the electorate of Carine after winning the seat in the 1996 election. She was subsequently re-elected to the seat in 2001 and 2005 but retired just before the 2008 election. Born in Norwood, South Australia, a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, she was educated at the local high school before leaving to arrive in Western Australia in 1987. In January 2008, Hodson-Thomas announced that she would retire from politics at the end of her term. She left the party as a result of a bitter leadership feud between Paul Omodei and then-leader Troy Buswell, and after Buswell had made inappropriate sexist comments to her in front of a large number of male colleagues, for which Buswell later apologised. 1996 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 14 December 1996 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Liberal–National coalition government, led by Premier Richard Court, won a second term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Dr Geoff Gallop since 15 October 1996. The election resulted in the Liberals winning an outright majority for the first time in Western Australia's history. Although Court did not need the support of the Nationals, the coalition was retained. Meanwhile, Labor attracted its lowest share of the primary vote since 1901. Karrinyup, Western Australia
Karrinyup is a suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, and is located 12 km north of Perth's central business district. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. History The name Karrinyup was originally derived from the word ''Careniup'', a Noongar name for a nearby swamp, an Aboriginal word apparently meaning "the place where bush kangaroos graze". It may also mean "the place where spiders are". In the 1840s, Samuel Moore took up a grant of in the northern part of the suburb. Moore's grant, Swan Location 92 was surveyed by P Chauncey in 1844 and Chauncey recorded a large swamp just to the east of Karrinyup as Careniup Swamp. In 1929, the foundation committee developing the Lake Karrinyup Country Club golf course opted to change the spelling. Marmion, Western Australia
Marmion is a northern coastal suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Joondalup. History Marmion was named after Patrick Marmion, master whaler, who operated a whaling station in the area in 1849. There are still some remains of the old whaling station in the adjacent suburb, Sorrento. A monument to Marmion can be found in Geneff Park in Padbury Circle, Sorrento. Prior to white settlement, the Whadjuk Aboriginal people, who called the area Mooro, gathered abalone and other shellfish in large numbers off the nearby reefs. The area was popular with fishermen in the 1930s, and numerous boatsheds and shacks were built there, as well as a whaling station. A townsite was gazetted in the area in 1940, but it remained largely undeveloped until the late 1950s, when the postal district of Marmion was approved. Duncraig, Western Australia
Duncraig is a northern suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, and is located north of Perth's central business district (CBD) between Marmion Avenue and Mitchell Freeway. Its local government area is the City of Joondalup. History Not much is known about Duncraig before the residential settlement boom – the majority of land in the area remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s. Sorrento is a northern coastal suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia in the local government area of the City of Joondalup. At its northwestern corner is the Hillarys Boat Harbour, built in the late 1980s. History A private subdivision of freehold land known as "Sorrento" was surveyed here in 1929. It is assumed that the name was taken from the Italian seaside town of Sorrento which is located south of Naples opposite the Isle of Capri. Mitchell Freeway
The Mitchell Freeway is a freeway in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, linking central Perth with the city of Joondalup. It is the northern section of State Route 2, which continues south as Kwinana Freeway and Forrest Highway. Along its length are interchanges with several major roads, including the Graham Farmer Freeway and Reid Highway. The southern terminus of the Mitchell Freeway is at the Narrows Bridge, which crosses the Swan River, and the northern terminus is at Hester Avenue, Clarkson, a suburb within the City of Wanneroo. Planning for the route began in the 1950s, and the first segment in central Perth was constructed between 1967 and 1973.
