Cambooya was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, Australia. History Cambooya was created by the Electoral Districts Act of 1887, taking effect at the 1888 elections. It was based on the Western Downs area. Cambooya was abolished at the 1912 elections, renamed the Electoral district of Pittsworth. Cambooya, Queensland
Cambooya is a rural town and locality in the Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Cambooya had a population of 1,584 people. Geography Cambooya is in the Darling Downs region, west of the state capital, Brisbane. Outside of the town, the land use is a mix of dry and irrigated crop-growing and grazing on native vegetation. History European settlement of the area dates from 1840, when Arthur Hodgson chose of prime land, which he named Eton Vale. In 1843 the New South Wales Commissioner of Crown Lands, Christopher Rolleston, carried out a survey and reserved a site on Eton Vale for a township. He named it ''Cambooya''. The origin of the name is unclear. It has been suggested it is a rendering of the Aboriginal word ''yambuya'' meaning ''tubers growing in a water hole''. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Patrick Perkins
Hon. Patrick Perkins, J. P., (10 October 1838 — 17 May 1901), nicknamed Paddy Perkins, was a brewer and politician in colonial Queensland. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and, later, a Member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Patrick Perkins was born in a humble cottage on a small farm in the village of Clonoulty near Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland. He was the second son of Thomas Perkins, a farmer, and his wife Ellen (''née'' Gooley). He attended the local National School. Thomas and Ellen Perkins and their eight children (including Patrick) immigrated on the ''Persian'', departing Southampton and arrived in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 9 April 1854. Henry John Daniels
Henry John Daniels (8 March 1850 – 13 June 1934) was a selector and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Daniels was born in Bethnal Green, London, to parents Samuel Daniels and his wife Charlotte (née Hood). and was educated in London before he arrived in Australia in 1861. After working in the tin mines at Stanthorpe from 1872 - 1874 he selected property at the Clifton Homestead Region, Mt Kent, Darling Downs in 1877. After selecting a large grazing farm at Gindie, in 1895 he transferred his leases in 1904 and moved to Brisbane, where he lived the rest of his life. Political career Having been a member of the Queensland Shearers' Union, Daniels, for the Labour Party, represented the seat of Cambooya in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1893 until his defeat in 1899. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. A Workers' Political Reform Association was founded to nominate candidates for the 1888 election, at which the Brisbane Trades and Labor Council endorsed six candidates. Donald MacKintosh (Australian Politician)
Donald Mackintosh (16 May 1840 – 5 May 1932) was a farmer and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Mackintosh was born in Lochaber, Scotland, to parents James Mackintosh and his wife Mary (née Macarthur) and was educated in the local Lochaber village school. On his arrival in Australia he was a drover and the manager of the Glencoe Farm near Warwick. Political career Having been a member of the Jondaryan Divisional Board, Mackintosh, for the Ministerialists, represented the seat of Cambooya in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1899 until the seat was abolished in 1912.
