Electoral District Of Burrum
Burrum was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, Australia. History Burrum was created by the Electoral Districts Act of 1887, taking effect at the 1888 elections. It was based on the rural area around Maryborough, Queensland. Burrum was abolished at the 1932 elections, its area being incorporated into the Electoral district of Isis and Electoral district of Wide Bay. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). The Liberal Party was a political party in the Australian state of Queensland in the early 20th century. It combined the main non-Labor forces, the "Kidstonites" of William Kidston and the Conservatives of Robert Philp, similar to the federal Commonwealth Liberal Party whose fusion it preceded. The Liberals held government from their formation in 1908 until defeat in 1915 after which they combined with other elements in the state to form the National Party. Albert Edward Victor Whitford (1877 – 29 January 1924) was a tailor and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was shot dead in Brisbane in 1924. Early days Whitford was born in Woolwich, England, to parents Charles Whitford and his wife Dora (née Kelly). He was a tailor in Inverell in 1906 before heading to Childers in 1910 to continue his trade. Political career Whitford, representing the Labor Party, first stood for the seat of Burrum in the Queensland Legislative Assembly at the 1912 state election only to be beaten by the sitting member, Colin Rankin. He was once again beaten by Rankin at the 1915 state election but finally won the seat in 1918. He held the seat until 1920. Colin Dunlop Wilson Rankin, (20 January 1869 – 2 November 1940) was a Scottish-born Australian soldier, politician, cane farmer and company director. Early life Colin Dunlop Wilson Rankin was born on 20 January 1869 at Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland, the second son of William Rankin, colliery manager, and his wife Jane, née Anderson. He was educated at Galston Public School and Kilmarnock Academy. Rankin accompanied his family to Queensland when his father became manager of the Queensland Collieries Co. Ltd. at Howard (near Maryborough) in 1884. Rankin joined its staff and from 1886 the Queensland Defence Force. By 1890 he was assistant company manager, grew sugar at Tigh-na-Bienne at Isis, Queensland (near Bundaberg, north of Howard), and became a clerk and valuator with the Isis Divisional Board (1890–1899).
