Electoral District Of Burke
Burke was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1873 to 1932, and again from 1960 to 1972. It covered remote rural areas in Northwest Queensland. It originally existed as a single-member district until 1888, when it was changed to a dual-member district. This was changed at the next election when it was split into two single electorates - Burke and Croydon. Burke was amalgamated into the district of Carpentaria from the 1932 election, but was revived for the 1960 election, until it was finally abolished at the 1972 election and renamed Mount Isa. Thomas Glassey
Thomas Glassey (26 February 1844 – 28 September 1936) was an Irish-born Australian politician. Born in Markethill, County Armagh, he received no formal education, working as a mill-worker and miner in Scotland and England. He migrated to Australia around 1885, when he became a miner at Bundamba, and was Secretary of the Bundamba Miners Association. He was a founding member of the Australian Labor Party in Queensland, and was the first Labor member of any Australian parliament when he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in 1888 as the member for Bundamba. Defeated in 1893, he was subsequently member for Burke from 1894 to 1896 and Bundaberg from 1896 to 1900. He left the Labor Party in 1899 over the party's socialist objective. Alec Inch
Alexander James Inch (23 October 1915 – 3 July 1994) was an Engine driver and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Inch was born at Charters Towers, Queensland, to Alexander William and his wife Elizabeth Genevieve (née Lacey) and was educated at St Columbus Primary School and Mount Carmel Christian Brothers in Charters Towers. During the depression, Inch worked in the pastoral industry and also doing railway maintenance. By the early 1940s, he had become a 1st class engine driver in Innisfail and in the 1950s he was a 1st class electrical and general winding-engine driver working for Mount Isa Mines. Political career At the 1960 election the seat of Burke was reincarnated and Inch, standing for the Labor Party, won the seat. He held the seat until 1972 when it was once again abolished and Inch moved to the new seat of Mount Isa but did not contest the seat in 1974. Arthur Jones (Australian Politician)
Arthur Jones (12 June 1892 – 30 June 1976) was a shearer and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early days Murphy was born at Worcestershire, England, to Thomas Jones and his wife Mary Anne (née Nutting) and was educated in Wolverley. As a child he moved to Canada but returned to England. He then travelled alone to Australia arriving in March 1911 where he became a "gun" shearer in the Hunter Valley and in January 1916 arrived in Queensland. In 1924–25 he demonstrated his shearing abilities at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in England and he was able to shear 200 sheep in an eight-hour day. Political career From 1920 until 1929 Jones was an official with the Australian Workers Union which helped launch his career in politics. In 1929 he won the seat of Burke, replacing Darby Riordan who had resigned the seat to successfully contest the House of Representatives seat of Kennedy in the federal parliament. David "Darby" Riordan (23 July 1886 – 15 October 1936) was an Australian politician. Riordan was the Australian Labor Party member for Burke in the Queensland Legislative Assembly, winning the seat in 1918. He held Burke till 1929 at which time he resigned from the seat to successfully contest the House of Representatives seat of Kennedy at the 1929 federal election. An independent or non-partisan politician is a politician not affiliated with any political party or bureaucratic association.
