The electoral district of Broadmeadows is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers an area of in outer northern Melbourne, and includes the suburbs of Broadmeadows, Victoria, Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Victoria, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Victoria, Coolaroo, Dallas, Victoria, Dallas, Fawkner, Victoria, Fawkner, Jacana, Victoria, Jacana and Meadow Heights, Victoria, Meadow Heights. It also includes parts of Glenroy, Victoria, Glenroy, Roxburgh Park, Victoria, Roxburgh Park, Somerton, Victoria, Somerton and Westmeadows, Victoria, Westmeadows. It lies within the Northern Metropolitan Region of the upper house, the Victorian Legislative Council, Legislative Council. Harry Kane (politician)
Harold Edward "Harry" Kane (5 July 1903 – 30 May 1962) was an Australian politician. He was born in Wangaratta to estate agent Daniel Kane and Martha Hannah Williams. He attended Essendon High School and worked for the Victorian Primary Producers Co-operative Society until around 19033, when he became a farmer at Diggers Rest and then Gisborne. On 16 December 1934 he married Beryl Irma Sanders, with whom he had three sons. He inherited his father's estate agency, and also served on Broadmeadows Shire Council from 1939 to 1946 (as president from 1945 to 1946). In 1955 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Liberal and Country Party member for Broadmeadows. Edward Joseph McGuire AM (born 29 October 1964) is an Australian television presenter, journalist and Australian Football League commentator. He is also an occasional ''Herald Sun'' newspaper columnist. He hosts Channel Nine’s Millionaire Hotseat, Monday night episodes of Footy Classified, and Network 10’s coverage of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. McGuire is the former president of the Collingwood Football Club; he stood down in 2021 after criticism of his handling of a report outlining systemic racism and involvement in racism at the club. Frank McGuire (born 16 June 1957) is an Australian politician representing the Victorian Legislative Assembly seat of Broadmeadows for the Labor Party since the 2011 Broadmeadows by-election. McGuire was a journalist, political adviser, and business consultant prior to entering politics. Journalism Prior to becoming a politician, McGuire was a journalist and the winner of two Walkley Awards for excellence in journalism. The first was in 1993, when he won the investigative report award for a segment called 'Deadly Force' that screened on ABC TV's '' Four Corners'' program in May 1992. In 2007, he won with fellow journalist Adam Shand, for a report on Nine Network's ''Sunday'' program, called "Force within a force" which was about alleged police corruption. 2011 Broadmeadows State By-election
A by-election for the Victorian Legislative Assembly district of Broadmeadows was conducted on 19 February 2011, and was retained by the Labor Party. The by-election was triggered by the resignation on 21 December 2010 of John Brumby, the former Premier of Victoria whose 11-year incumbent Labor government was defeated at the 2010 election. Writs for the by-election were issued on 20 January 2011. Background Primary votes in Broadmeadows at the 2010 election saw Labor win 62.3 percent and the Liberals win 25.3 percent, with a 71 percent two-party Labor vote. Being Labor's safest seat at that election, the Liberals chose not to contest the by-election. Labor chose to stand Frank McGuire, brother of Eddie McGuire as their candidate. The premier of Victoria is the head of government in the Australian state of Victoria. The premier is appointed by the governor of Victoria, and is the leader of the political party able to secure a majority in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Responsible government came to the colony of Victoria in 1855. John Brumby
John Mansfield Brumby (born 21 April 1953) is the current Chancellor of La Trobe University and former Victorian Labor Party politician who was Premier of Victoria from 2007 to 2010. He became leader of the Victorian Labor Party and premier after the resignation of Steve Bracks. He also served as the Minister for Veterans' Affairs and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs. Joan Kirner
Joan Elizabeth Kirner (née Hood; 20 June 1938 – 1 June 2015) was an Australian politician who was the 42nd Premier of Victoria, serving from 1990 to 1992. A Labor Party member of the Parliament of Victoria from 1982 to 1994, she was a member of the Legislative Council before later winning a seat in the Legislative Assembly. James Harley Kennan SC (25 February 1946 – 4 August 2010) was an Australian politician and later adjunct professor of law at Deakin University. Kennan earned a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne.
