Electoral districts of Victoria are the electoral districts, commonly referred to as "seats" or "electorates", into which the Australian State of Victoria is divided for the purpose of electing members of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, one of the two houses of the Parliament of the State. The State is divided into 88 single-member districts. The Legislative Assembly has had 88 electorates since the 1985 election, increased from 81 previously. Electoral boundaries are redrawn from time to time, in a process called ''redivision''. Crowlands, Victoria
Crowlands is a locality nestled on the Wimmera River and is located approximately northeast of the town of Ararat, in the state of Victoria, Australia. It comprises a small village area of scattered houses and larger farms. History Before European settlement The traditional owners of the locality are the Dja Dja Wurrung or Jaara people who are part of the larger Kulin nation. The Jaara people suffered badly when gold was discovered and their population dropped dramatically as the Europeans converted more land to mining. The early years In 1836 Major Thomas Mitchell passed through the locality on his exploration of the Colony. During the 1840s European settlers began to move into the locality to establish sheep runs and harvest the nearby timber. William McLellan (Australian Politician)
William McLellan (12 August 1831 – 12 April 1906) was a mining agent and politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), Minister of Mines in the 1870s. Early life McLennan was born in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland, the son of Peter McLellan and Margaret, née ''Sim''. He left Scotland in June 1850 for the Port Phillip District, then a portion of New South Wales. When gold was discovered by Edward Hargraves, he went to Summer Hill and Turon diggings, New South Wales, and worked with some success. Returning to Victoria in July 1851, on discovery of gold there, he went to Ballarat and Forest Creek, and was amongst the first pioneers of Bendigo, where he worked at Golden Gully. After an extensive experience on the principal diggings, McLellan settled in Melbourne in 1853. William Wilson (16 February 1834 – 16 November 1891) was a politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, and later of the Victorian Legislative Council. Biography Wilson was born at Renton, two miles from Dumbarton, Scotland. He emigrated to Australia in October 1852, in the ship ''Sir William Molesworth''—a joint stock concern—all the passengers having an interest in her. The captain and crew went out on 1s. per month wages, in order to get their discharge on landing. Shortly after his arrival, in 1853, Mr. Wilson commenced business in the timber trade at Geelong as a member of the firm of Tate, Wilson & Wright. David Gaunson (19 January 1846 – 2 January 1909) was an Australian politician and criminal solicitor who conducted the defence of the infamous Australian bushranger, Ned Kelly in the pre-trial stages.
