Electoral District Of Surry Hills
Surry Hills was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, named after and including Surry Hills and was originally created in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. It consisted of part of the abolished seat of Sydney-Flinders and parts of Sydney-Cook and Randwick. James Graham (physician)
Sir James Graham (29 July 1856 – 8 March 1913) was a Scottish-born physician and politician, active in Australia. He was Mayor of Sydney in 1901. Graham was born in Edinburgh, son of Thomas Graham, marble polisher, and his wife Jane ( ''née'' Square). Graham graduated M.A. at University of Edinburgh in 1879 and M.B. and C.M. in 1882. Graham migrated to Sydney in 1884 but then returned to Europe in August 1888 and studied at Berlin, Vienna and Paris. In 1888, he obtained the M.D. degree of Edinburgh Medical School with gold medal for his thesis on "Hydatid Disease in its Clinical Aspects". Returning to Sydney he was appointed superintendent of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital which, largely by his influence, became an excellent training-ground for the medical profession. From 1897 he was lecturer in midwifery at the University of Sydney (working under Thomas Peter Anderson Stuart) and held this position until 1912. Tom Shannon (Australian Politician)
Thomas John Shannon (9 December 1884 – 9 June 1954) was an Australian real estate agent, alderman and state politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1927 until his death. He was variously a member of the Labor Party(ALP) and the Australian Labor Party (NSW). Early life and career Shannon was born in Redfern, New South Wales and was the son of a cab driver. He was educated to elementary level at St Benedict's, Broadway and worked as a grocer's boy and eventually as a real estate agent. He became involved with community organisations including the Hibernian Australian Catholic Benefit Society, a provider of social security insurance, and was elected as an Alderman on Sydney City Council between 1921 and 1927 and between 1930 and 1948. Arthur Buckley
Arthur William Buckley (16 January 1891 – 10 June 1974) was an Australian politician. He was born in Charters Towers in Queensland to miner William James Buckley and Louisa, ''née'' Carlson. He attended primary school before being apprenticed to an electrician; he subsequently worked as a boilermaker's assistant and in the sugar industry. In 1912 he moved to Sydney to work as a tram conductor. A member of the Industrial Workers of the World, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1917 as the Labor member for Surry Hills. Arrested during the 1917 general strike, he was president of the Amalgamated Railway and Tramway Service Association branch of the Australian Railways Union from around 1918 to 1922. Henry Hoyle
Henry "Harry" Clement Hoyle (20 November 1852 – 20 July 1926) was an Australian politician and rugby league football administrator of the 1890s and 1900s. A life member of the New South Wales Rugby League, Hoyle is credited with helping to craft the rhetoric justifying its successful 1908 split from the New South Wales Rugby Football Union. Early life The son of a sea captain, Hoyle was born in Millers Point, New South Wales on 20 November 1852. He was educated at a Balmain convent school and Fort Street Public School. At age 10 he began his working life in Balmain with Booth's sawmills. He was apprenticed as a Blacksmith with P N Russell & Co,. then worked at Mort's Dock in 1868.
